Super Six Launch to hit off in Edinburgh
A battle of the UK’s best hockey stars will hit off in Edinburgh 21-22 April when the Super Six teams meet for the first time, launching the Great Britain Super League.
Chief Executive of Scottish Hockey, Brent Deans said, “The Super Six is the league to watch, it will showcase the best talent in Britain, making for some great hockey. It’s been a good year for hockey and the Super League will only further develop Britain’s athletes for international competitions.”
The GB Super Six consists of six teams per gender, including two from Scotland, the Caledonian Cougars and Highland Jaguars. Three teams are from England, the Pennine Pumas, Saxon Tigers and Wessex Leopards while the Celtic Panthers hail from Wales.
The action stretches out over three consecutive weekends beginning at Peffermill, the teams then travel to King George V Playing Fields in Swansea 28 April and finish 5-6 May in Manchester at Belle Vue.
The league will act as a filter for Olympic development leading up Beijing 2008 and more importantly for Britain, the London 2012 games.
David Faulkner, Performance Director for GB, said “The Great Britain Super League will provide annual assessment of athletes in an appropriate competitive environment and at the same time provide a platform to grow and develop our performance Coaching and Officiating GB wide.”
GB National team coaches, Jason Lee and Danny Kerry hand selected coaches from a host of former international players for the Super Six, including past stars such as Craig Parnham and Bobby Crutchley.
Tickets for the Super League are available at the gates for £5 per day or £8 per weekend.
Parents get in half price! Any parent attending with an under-16 child at Peffermill get a 50% discount, all under 16’s get in free.
