Stars of world hockey to compete in Richard Docherty memorial tournament in Edinburgh

05 December 2011

On the 27 June 2010 a truly charismatic and talented member of the Scottish hockey community tragically and suddenly passed away at the young age of 27. Richard Docherty was a huge character in the lives of his family, friends and the members of Inverleith Hockey Club, and it is fitting that his memory will celebrated with an annual memorial tournament in his name.
Over the last eighteen months, members of Inverleith have worked alongside Richard's family to create an indoor tournament that will not only reflect Richard's character and style, but also be a true celebration of his life.
Subsequently, it is with great pride and excitement that Inverleith Hockey Club have announced that the first 'Richard Docherty Indoor Cup' will take place on 7-8 January 2012 at the newly built [EN]GAGE Sports Centre at Edinburgh Napier University's Sighthill Campus.
The tournament will include six competing teams; Highland Jaguars, Celtic Panthers, national champions Inverleith, Grove Menzieshill, Germany's Grossflottbecker THGC of Hamburg, and newly formed Dutch side HC RDG.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to witness some of Europe's best players and the tournament alone can claim to feature players with a combined total of over 1500 international caps and 40 international medals, including World and Olympic champions, among them.
Scotland will be represented at the tournament by the national senior men's indoor squad under the guise of Highland Jaguars, whilst last season's top two club sides Grove Menzieshill HC and newly crowned National League indoor champions Inverleith HC will also be in action. The Welsh senior men's indoor squad will also compete in the tournament as Celtic Panthers.
International opposition will be provided by Grossflottbecker THGC, including members of Germany's 2008 Olympic winning squad, and by HC RDG from Holland, who have been formed by Richard's brother Laurence Docherty, himself an international Olympian, and will also include Dutch legends Taco Van der Honert and Floris Jan Boevelander, and triple Spanish Olympian Rodrigo Garza.
Graham Stuart, a close friend of Richard and member of Inverleith Hockey Club, said:
"The intention was to create a free, family event that will provide great entertainment and exciting hockey for people to attend. We've attracted some of the best hockey players from Scotland and overseas and we really are set-up for a great weekend. It is hoped the event will be well received and supported by the Scottish hockey community as we aim to raise a significant sum for Diabetes UK Scotland in Richard's memory."
A Coaching Conference will also run alongside the tournament and this will be an opportunity for the coaches within Scotland to attend five one hour seminars hosted by some of the world-class stars competing in the event, where they will discuss keys areas of the modern hockey game in terms of both indoor and outdoor hockey.
Moreover, on the evening of Saturday 7 January, the APEX International Hotel in conjunction with Diabetes UK Scotland is hosting a 'Black Tie Gala Auction Dinner' to raise funds for the Richard Docherty Tribute Fund.
Inverleith Hockey Club are delighted that Scotland and British Lions great Scott Hastings will be attending to host the event, providing guests at the dinner the opportunity to ask questions and listen to one of the country's finest sporting stars.
Inverleith Hockey Club would like to sincerely thank their tournament partners, who generosity and support have allowed the club to offer free tickets to attend the tournament and the coaching conference. They are Activcity, Apex Hotels, Diabetes UK Scotland, [EN]GAGE and DITA UK.
