Inverleith close with a win over Lille

19 February 2012

EUROPEAN INDOOR CLUB TROPHY

With Racing Club Bruxelles winning their final game against the Portuguese side Lousada, Inverleith`s final clash with top side Lille had no further bearing on the promotion stakes.

Inverleith recovered some of their lost composure by destroying Lille`s perfect record with a 5-4 victory, but too little too late for promotion.  The French side opened with a goal in two minutes from Thibaut Blondel, but Tom Cousins replied with a rebound goal after Moodie`s initial shot had been blocked by the keeper.
The Scots had a whirlwind last four minutes to the first half, Salmond hit the post, Dick then scored with a low shot from a penalty corner, Moodie popped the ball home after a scramble and then John Harris made it 4-1 from the spot.

Within 20 seconds of the restart Moodie made it 5-1 with a tap in after a pass from Salmond, but thereafter the Edinburgh side seemed to fall out of the game and allowed Lille to bring the score back to 5-4.   Inverleith had the chance to halt the French recovery, they were awarded a penalty but this time Harris` effort was easily saved by the goalkeeper.  It then took a spectacular save on the line by MacKenzie from a set piece to keep the French out at the denouement.
This result leaves Inverleith in a very creditable third place, but unfortunately promotion was not on the agenda.

On the domestic front, Grange lost a little ground at the top of the Subway national league when they were held to a 3-3 draw by Grove Menzieshill, but still remain in second spot.

Rob Barr from the spot gave the Edinburgh side a narrow half-time advantage.  Menzieshill stormed into a 3-1 lead t
