District & Reserve Cup & Plate finals round-up
05 May 2012
The District & Reserve Cup and Plate competitions reached their conclusion today, with six finals being staged at Peffermill in Edinburgh to determine the winners of this season's trophies.
In the Men's Reserve Plate final, Kelburne III and Inverleith III got the day's proceedings underway with the Buddies securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Purple Robes.
Vice-Captain Andrew Bremner opened the scoring in the 7th minute from a penalty corner to give Kelburne a slender goal advantage at half time.
Shortly after the interval, two strikes in six minutes settled the contest; the first was a spectacular strike from Fabian Goldie in the 46th minute before Billy Anderson made the game safe with the third goal.
Western Wildcats III and VWS Dundee Wanderers III featured in the Men's Reserve Cup final, with the Glasgow men winning the contest 3-1.
The Wildcats struck first in the 27th minute with a penalty stroke from captain Alasdair Reid to see them a goal up at half time.
Wanderers were quick off the mark in the second half however, equalising in the 39th minute when Robertson scored from open play. The lead was short lived as Western took the lead for the second time in the match following Barry Kane's goal in the 43rd minute. Cameron Laws stretched their advantage over the Taysiders nine minutes later with the third goal from a penalty corner.
In the first of the Women's finals, it was a battle for bragging rights in the North East with Ellon Ladies playing regional rivals Aberdeen GSFP Ladies for the District Plate. The plate was won by a solitary goal following a 55th minute strike from Ellon's Linda Mitchell.
Meanwhile, Orkney were making their second District Cup final appearance in three years as they took on capital outfit Erskine Stewart's Melville FP II.
With the match deadlocked at 0-0 at half time, it was a close encounter with defences on top. However, Esrkine Stewart's Melville FP opened the scoring in the 50th minute following a deft finish from Jo Pentland, which nestled in the left hand corner of the net.
With Orkney pressing for an equaliser and the Edinburgh side dropping deeper into their own half, the Orcadians forced a penalty corner in the 60th minute. The set play was subsequently dispatched with great aplomb by Hannah Johnston to gain parity at 1-1.
The match looked like it would go to penalty strokes with only a minute left on the clock, but with Erskine Stewart's Melville FP encamped in the Orkney area, an ensuing stramash led to the ball falling to Alison Hogg, who sent an unstoppable shot past Lynn Curister to clinch the District Cup and spark wild celebrations amongst the players.
The Men's District Plate Final was the penultimate match of the day with Grove Menzieshill II facing Fifers Alpha Data Carnegie II.
The Taysiders ran out comfortable 5-0 winners in the end after a close first half.
Chris Anderson was the hero, the Grove Menzieshill vice-captain notching a hat trick to take the trophy back north.
His first goal came in the 33rd minute from a penalty corner, before a strike in the 46th minute was followed by another penalty corner set piece in the 66th minute. Goals for Ben Harper in the 56th minute and Kyle Moir two minutes before full-time setted the outcome.
Finally, Kelburne II were hoping to emulate the club's 1st XI side as they targeted a league and cup double against west coast rivals Greaves Clydesdale II in the Men's District Cup Final.
In the end, it was a fairly straight-forward 3-0 win for Kelburne, capping off an excellent season for the Paisley club that has produced a haul of trophies for the Whitehaugh trophy cabinet, including the National League Division 1 title, Regional League Central Division 1 title, Scottish Cup, District Cup and Reserve Plate.
Gordon Menzies scored the first of his two goals in the 6th minute before Colin Bryce extended the lead in the 18th minute to make the score 2-0 at half time.
The game was sealed when Menzies grabbed his second of the afternoon in the 47th minute.
