Hair today, gone tomorrow for Scottish hockey boys

Scotland U18 Boys held a slightly unconventional training session last Sunday at Clydesdale Hockey Club’s Titwood grounds in Glasgow.
In addition to the usual drills and fitness, 28 boys took part in a sponsored leg wax to raise funds for their upcoming trip to compete in the EuroHockey U18 Nations Championships in Vienna this July.
Scotland U18 Head Coach Graham Dunlop explained: “The boys have done incredibly well to qualify for the A division championships, but now we need to try and meet the cost of getting them out to Europe plus the week’s accommodation for the whole team, coaches and manager.”
Team captain Ed Greaves added: “Leg waxing seemed a fun way for us to raise some of the money we needed – though, judging by the screams, perhaps some of the lads didn’t think it was that funny at the time!”
Three staff from the Catriona Craig Bespoke Beauty Salon at 116B Nithsdale Road, Pollokshields kindly volunteered their services for the day to wax the hirsute hockey heroes’ legs. In fact it wasn’t only legs that ended up being waxed, as Steve Foster, one of the U18 coaches, put his patriotism to the test by asking the ladies to wax a Scotland Saltire on his back.
To sweeten the pain, and add to the team funds, the Under 18 players’ parents had prepared an assortment of cakes and biscuits which were sold in the clubhouse during the training session.
Fundraising will continue in the run-up to the Championships, and any sponsorship from Scottish companies would be greatly appreciated by the team as they prepare to represent their country in Europe.
