Big day of action in National League 1

A mixed day for Western Wildcats, the men are top of the pile in the men`s competition but the women fell off their league perch after going down 2-1 to Milne Craig Clydesdale Western at Titwood.

Western Wildcats clawed their way to the top of the men`s National League 1 after a narrow single goal victory at Clydesdale, they are on the same points as Grange but have a single goal advantage.

In the first half there was little to choose between the sides at Titwood although Wildcats` strikers Rob Harwood and Andrew McConnell had the best of the chances that were going. At the other end a Ciaran Crawford deflection which was easily blocked by the Wildcats` keeper was the home side`s best effort.

Crawford had the opportunity to put Clydesdale ahead early in the second half but his penalty corner drag flick was easily blocked by Gavin Sommerville. At the other end further chances fell to Harwood before he finally gave Wildcats the lead. McConnell`s initial shot cannoned off a post but Harwood was on hand to bury the rebound

Grange did their title hopes no harm at all with a convincing 3-0 win over champions Bromac Kelburne to move into second spot. It was a goalless first half although the Edinburgh side had to survive a penalty scare, but Johnny Christie`s spot effort was well saved by Nathan Doherty.

Grange`s Irish striker Frank Ryan broke the deadlock in the second half with a fierce reverse stick shot from the edge of the circle. Ryan added a second when he deflected home a penalty corner shot from Cammie Fraser. The points were sealed with a set piece strike by Dan Coultas which went into the roof of the net off a Kelburne defender`s stick.

Elsewhere, a hat-trick by Graeme Campbell was the catalyst in Hillhead`s 4-0 win over Uddingston for their first points of the season. Ewan Campbell was the provider of Hillhead`s other strike.

There was a ding-dong affair on Tayside between Dundee Wanderers and Edinburgh University, the contest was completed with a 4-4 draw and a share of the points. It was one each at the interval, Kevin Wong`s initial strike for the students was cancelled out by a penalty corner strike by Callum Ross.

The game progressed to 3-3 in the second half, Ross again and Ross Glashan were on target for the home side while David Mawhinney and Callum White replied for Edinburgh.

Glashan again put Wanderers 4-3 ahead but a set piece conversion by Davyn Keuter tied up the eight goal thriller despite the students having a couple of late penalty corner opportunities.
