Under 16’s Pool Day Results

 

In a bright spring day at Peffermill, the Under 16’s Club Cup served up some excellent hockey in front of a sizeable crowd for the pool stages of the boys and girls tournament. These results gave the standings for the finals day at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre on the 22nd of April. There were 9 teams represented in both sides showcasing the fantastic youth talent being developed at clubs across the country.

Boys

Pool A

In Pool A, the opening game of the day served up a cracker between Grange and Inverleith. Grange took an early lead when David MacRae slotted home in just the second minute. Both teams created good chances and grew into the game, but it was again Grange who scored to make it 2-0 just before half time with Brodie Nichol getting this one. It looked like it would stay that way going into the break but Inverleith got a vital goal back just before the hooter. As the second half started, both teams exchanged chances, with Inverleith equalising as Shirridan grabbed his second of the game. Oliver Paterson’s strike a minute later though was the final goal of the game, as Grange won 3-2.

The second game in Pool A saw Inverleith take on Uddingston. A goal from a well worked penalty corner halfway through the first half from Charlie Jack gave Inverleith the lead in a closely contested half. It would remain that way until halfway through the second half, when Nicholas Temperley gave Inverleith their second goal as they ran out 2-0 winners.

Pool A’s final match of the day saw Grange beat Uddingston 5-0. Early goals from Caughey and Paterson saw Grange lead 2-0 at the break. Paterson added his second just after half time to make it 3-0 before further goals from Brodie Nichol and Jamie Croll finished the scoring for Grange.

Pool B

Pool B began with Western Wildcats taking on Watsonians. Watsonians raced into a 3-goal lead in the space of 2 minutes, coming from Euan Burgess and a brace by Ted Porter. Matthew O’Toole pulled one back from Wildcats just after half time, but Conall Milligan quickly restored Watsonians 3 goal advantage. Wildcats continued to put pressure on the Watsonians defence and added a second goal from O’Toole from a penalty corner but it was not enough and the game finished 4-2 to Watsonians.

Game two in Pool B saw a battle between Western Wildcats and Grove Menzieshill. This was a closely contested game, so much so that the two goals in this 1-1 draw came in the same minute. Dale Shearer gave Grove Menzieshill the lead before Scott Roberts equalised immediately from the restart and the game finished level.

The close games continued as Grove Menzieshill took on Watsonians in the final Pool B match. Ted Porter gave Watsonians the lead on the stroke of half time with a well taken finish, and it would remain 1-0 until the closing stages when Cameron Welsh added a second for Watsonians as Grove Menzieshill pushed to find an equaliser, final score 2-0.

Pool C

Pool C began in the same competitive action, with Perthshire taking on Highland. After four minutes this game was already 2-2. Perthshire opened the scoring through Lewis Brydon before a quickfire double from Moukaoume and McFadden put Highland in front. A penalty corner finished off by Kilpatrick levelling the scores and it remained that way into the second half. The winning goal went Perthshire’s way with another penalty corner, this time finished off by Alex Wilson.

Clydesdale took on Highland in the next game in Pool C, Highland led 1-0 at half time through Alastair Douglas. Clydesdale equalised as Ben Galloway fired home a penalty corner before Highland scored a very late winner through Ian McFadden.

The final boys game of the day saw Perthshire take on Clydesdale. Perthshire led 1-0 at half time through Will Goodman. With spectacular play in the second half, Perthshire scored three further goals through an excellent hat trick from Struan Griffiths to overall win the match 4-0.

Girls

Pool A

The girls pool kicked off with a close fought tie between Clydesdale and Inverleith. Clydesdale opened the scoring in the third minute from a penalty corner but Inverleith soon equalised through Jasmine Mitchell. The scoring was completed in the first half but in the second half, Clydesdale retook the lead through Kate Rennie. However, once again Inverleith equalised from a penalty corner. Both teams had chances to win the game but the game finished all square at 2-2.

In match two in Pool A, Clydesdale would again take an early lead over Grange with a penalty corner from Tia Mansbridge in the fourth minute of the match opening. Both sides had multiple chances as the game continued, and Grange eventually got their equaliser with just three minutes to go from a penalty corner which was finished by Nina Constable.

In the final game, Grange claimed top spot in Pool A after a 4-1 win over Inverleith. The game was end to end but no goals were scored until the final minute of the first half when Ellie Mackenzie finished off a good team move. Mackenzie added her second and third either side of a Skye Waugh goal to give Grange a 4-0 lead. Inverleith claimed a consolation goal in the final minute to make the final score 4-1.

Pool B

Pool B began with Watsonians taking on GHK. Both sides exchanged chances but GHK went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a penalty corner scored by Lucy Williamson. GHK stretched their lead to two as Williamson scored her second. Watsonians pulled one back through Scothorne but GHK held on for the win.

In game two, GHK took on Perthshire and had an emphatic win, finishing 7-1 winners. Three goals by Anna Smith was the highlight of the game, two great open play goals followed by firing home a penalty corner. Ciara Forgie scored Perthshire’s only goal of the game.

In the final game of Pool B, Watsonians went into the half time break with a single goal lead over Perthshire, Emily Simmers opening the scoring. Two goals early in the first half, Heather Taylor and Tori Williamson ensured that Watsonians won the game 3-0.

Pool C

The opening game of Pool C saw a close and tense game between CALA and Fjordhus Reivers, neither team were able to take advantage of the chances created and the game finished with no goals.

Game two was between Uddingston and Fjordhus Reivers. Uddingston scored the opening goal of the game in the second minute through Adrienne Muir. A penalty corner from Molly Turnbull got Fjordhus Reivers back in the game, before goals from Aitchison and Miller gave the borders side a 3-1 win.

The final game in Pool C was between CALA and Uddingston. CALA raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Whitaker, Deane and Rutherford. In the second half, Whitaker added her second and CALA’s fourth, and Abbie Grant finished the scoring as CALA ran out 5-0 winners to top the pool.
