Great youth hockey action in U18 Club Cup

09:00- Boys’ Pool A – Grange 1-1 Uddingston

It was an even opening to the match from both teams, until the eleventh minute when the Uddingston keeper was called into action to deny a Grange opener with a great save with his right foot. From this Uddingston broke up the pitch and almost capitalised, but fired the shot wide.

Grange looked the stronger side but failed to take their chances from a few penalty corners opportunities and at the break it was all square – 0-0.

Just after the restart Uddingston started the brighter of the two sides but Grange managed to ride out the initial pressure. It took until the 32nd minute before the opening goal, and it came from Uddingston’s Jamie Wilson who pounced onto a deflected save to put them in front with eight minutes to go. Grange didn’t take long to get the equaliser from a run of play with just minutes to go – the scorer was Calum Nicholson.

A late injury to a Grange player took the sting out the game as Grange looked like they might have nicked a win at the end, but it finished 1-1.

09:00- Pool B – Watsonians 1-5 Grove Menzieshill

It was a pretty tight game in the first half with both teams having chances and equal possession. On the stroke of half time Jamie Golden gave Grove Menzieshill the lead from a well-worked field goal. This set the tone for going into the second half.

Just two minutes after the restart John Stephen added to Grove Menzieshill’s tally with another neat team goal to make it 0-2. Straight from the restart Watsonians were straight at the Grange defence and Euan Burgees pulled one back with a great strike.

But it wasn’t long before Grove Menzieshill regained their two-goal cushion through another strike from Golden on the 29th minute. Lewis McKenzie made it 1-4 on the 34th minute as Grove Menzieshill looked to be linking well in the final third and reaping the rewards for it. Right from the restart John Stephen bagged his double for the day and Grove Menzieshill’s fifth. A great second half secured Grove Menzieshill’s Pool B first match victory.

09:55- Pool C – Inverleith 3-3 Western Wildcats

Western Wildcats opted to play with a kicking back but this didn’t seem like an issue as they opened the scoring on the tenth minute through a well worked field goal scored by Fraser Moran.

It was a pretty even encounter and the game was 0-1 at the break. Just after the break it didn’t take Inverleith long to get the equaliser. Straight from the restart they had taken the lead after a loose pass in the middle of the pitch was intercepted allowing Charlie Jack to pick the ball up, run past a few western players into the D, and fire home into an empty net.

Just two minutes later and it was another well-worked play up the field before Magnus Harkness finished with a reverse hit past the Western defender. 3-1. Western Wildcats made it an existing end to the match by pulling one back with just three minutes left to play – Glenn Anderson was the scorer.

Just a minute later and the continued pressure from Western Wildcats resulted in a player being brought down in the D and a penalty flick was awarded. Fraser Moran made no mistake with the equaliser with a rocket of a flick from the spot. 3-3 full time.

10:50 – Pool A – Grange 7-0 Perthshire

It took just five minutes before Grange got themselves on the scoreboard – a well worked penalty corner allowed Robbie Croll to get his first of the day.

It was followed by continued pressure from Grange but it wasn’t until the 12th minute before the pressure paid off. Another penalty corner routine gave Grange a two goal cushion and Croll his second.

Just after the break it only took two minutes before it was another goal for Grange this time from open play and the scorer of the third was Jamie Rintoul. Croll made it four and got his third of the day on the 25th minute – a great one-two pass around the goalkeeper to fire it home.

He was in fine scoring form as Croll added his fourth of the day through lovely neat play to smash it home. Goal number six came from a great ball into the D which was delightfully glided into the bottom left-hand corner by Joel Davenport. The seventh and final goal came just minutes later; another strike with a really good play by Robbie Galloway.

10:50 – Pool B – Clydesdale 1-6 Grove Menzieshill

Clydesdale started strong and in the sixth minute and got the opener through a well-worked field goal that Jack Nairn finished off. Grove Menzieshill equalised just four minutes later through an excellent penalty corner, and it was possibly no surprise that the in-form Jamie Golden found the back of the net.

Four minutes before the break and it was Golden who got his second of the day, this time through a field goal to give his side the lead at the break. Golden hadn’t finished yet, he added his third of the day with another great team goal.

Just two minutes later a penalty corner was smashed home by another magnificent drag flick strike by Golden to make it 1-4. The fifth came from another well-worked penalty corner and up stepped Golden to get his fifth of the day. Right on the death another penalty corner is awarded and Golden, yet again, smashed it home to give him a double hat-trick, and Grove Menzieshill the win.

11:45 – Pool C – Inverleith 2-0 Aberdeen Grammar

Inveleith got off to a flyer in this match with a well-worked team goal that saw Livio Belotti open the scoring.

It was a tight match and the score remained at 1-0 going into the break. On the 32nd minute a penalty corner was converted by Belotti to give him, and Inverleith, a second goal of the day.

Aberdeen Grammar had a chance at the death to pull one back but failed to convert the penalty corner, and it finished 2-0

11:45- Girls’ – Clydesdale Western 2-0 Granite City Wanderers

A close first half saw chances fall to both sides but neither team could convert and the game remained goalless at the break.

Olivia Capaldi opened the scoring shortly after the break from a delightful team goal with a great finish.

Clydesdale left it late to seal their victory. The second came in the 39th minute from Anna Hoolaghan; a fantastic penalty corner routine saw Hoolaghan strike to give Clydesdale the 2-0 victory.

12:40- Boys’ Pool A – Uddingston 6-0 Perthshire

It was a great start to the match by Uddingston when they scored in the first minute of the game through Ben Carroll. Just seven minutes later and their score was doubled; another field goal was well-worked and Gavin McKenzie was the scorer.

Louis Gardener made it 3-0 when a great strike found the back of the net, and 3-0 was how it remained going in at the break.

On the 25th minute it was 4-0 to Uddingston. It came through a fantastic team effort as the initial shot was well-saved by the Perthshire goalkeeper only to be parried out into a busy D, then a neat one-two around the goalkeeper was finished off by Jamie Wilson.

On the 28th minute Gardener made it 5-0 after some more really nicely worked build-up play. Six minutes before the end and Gardiner got his third of the match. It was a piece of fantastic striking ability with a smartly executed reverse stick shot rifled into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Uddingston pushed for another but Perthshire held on and the match ended 6-0.

12:40- Pool B – Watsonians 4-2 Clydesdale

The final boys’ Pool B match was a close contest between two talented sides. Watsonians took the lead in the sixth minute through a well-taken shot by Christian McCulloch who fired it past the Clydesdale keeper. Clydesdale got their equaliser on the 14th minute through a well-worked penalty corner routine that was scored by Duncan Adams.

Straight from the restart Clydesdale stole possession and managed to take the lead through another penalty corner sequence, this time the scorer was David Sturgees. It was looking like Clydesdale would go into the break ahead but a last minute goal on the stroke of half time from Euan Burgees meant it was all to play for in the second half.

The game had chances at both ends and it didn’t look like the two sides could be separated, but on the 30th minute Watsonians took the lead through Euan Leask. With Clydesdale pressing for an equaliser they left themselves exposed, and on the 39th minute Watsonians secured the win when they broke and scored through McCulloch to add to his tally for the day.

13:35 – Boys’ Pool C – Aberdeen Grammar 0-5 Western Wildcats

In the final match of the Boys’ Pool C group it was a very even encounter in the first ten minutes. Western Wildcats started to look more threatening, playing a kicking back, and with the play being tight it was an edgy opening ten minutes. But on the 14th minute Fraser Moran opened the scoring for Western Wildcats through a great team goal to put the first strike on the board. It remained 0-1 going into the break.

On the 26th minute Western Wildcats doubled their lead through a Scott Anderson penalty corner conversion. Two goals then came in quick succession in the 30th minute. Euan Cowan picked the ball upon the edge of the D and fired a reverse stick shot into the bottom right hand side of the net leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

It was straight from the restart Western Wildcats regained possession and the ball was played to Adam McKenzie on the right hand side who drove into the D and fired the ball into the net. The fifth goal came right at the end of the match and it was Fraser Moran from a penalty corner who got his second of the game.

In a dominant performance Watsonians started the match as they meant to go on throughout the contest. A goal on the second minute by Sophie McGlynn showed their intentions early on. Just six minutes later Watsonians doubled their lead through a well-worked team goal finished off by McGlynn again.

In the tenth minute it was 3-0, this time through a nicely finished penalty corner from Georgia Jones. Jones got another just five minutes later, this time through an eye-catching strike to make it 4-0 going into the break.

McGlynn got her hat-trick on the 27th minute after she converted from a penalty corner. In the dying seconds Watsonians brilliantly worked their way through the Uddingston defence and Lucy Watt was rewarded with the goal. The game finished 5-0.

14:45 –Girls’ – Clydesdale Western 1-0 Inverleith

There were difficult conditions for both teams in this match as they battled with the wind and rain.

It was a close game with both teams failing to create any real clear cut opportunities.

It wasn’t until late into the second half before Clydesdale got the goal that would see them finish the match as winners.

14:45 – Girls’ – Fjordhus Reivers 2-1 Granite City Wanderers

What started out as a cold but pleasant October Sunday, soon turned into challenging conditions.

Both teams battled against the wind and it took until the 13th minute before Fjordhus Reivers got the opener through a well-taken penalty corner, scored by Erin Laurence.

Granite City Wanderers wasted no time in responding and straight from the restart were back on level terms through a brilliant build-up before Tony Dawson smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Annabel Ballantyne got the winning goal for Reivers on the 34th minute through a well-worked field goal that was stroked into the back of the net.

The game didn’t provide many more clean cut opportunities and it finished 0-1.
