When you are not playing hockey for Scotland, what is your occupation?
I am a hockey coach, mainly goalies but have ventured out into the world of field players too!
What is the hardest thing about your training programme?
Everything! We’re constantly trying to get the best out of ourselves so the programme is usually pretty tough all round. The worst bit is the fitness testing though and the 150m shuttles!
What is the strangest thing you keep in your stick bag?
A small furry chipmunk I have named Jamba, he moved in 3 years ago and we’ve been mates ever since, most people see it as a bit strange…
What is the most amusing thing that you have seen on a hockey pitch?
During a junior club game at HDM, the opposition sneakily changed the ball for an apple at a PC, obviously as it was struck it exploded, sent my defenders diving for cover to avoid the shrapnel!
What are you reading lately?
Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger, it’s about the boom and bust oil town in West Texas called Odessa, which pins all of its hopes and dreams on their high school football team every year to win the State Championship because without it, there’s not really much to do.
Dogs or Cats?
Dogs
If you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 things would you take?
1. iPod, including big speakers and a battery that never ran out
2. Phone, to send a text to invite people round obviously
3. Big comfy chair that can rock, swivel and recline
4. 50” TV with the world’s biggest extension cord and best Sky package
5. My yacht
When did you start playing hockey and what was it that drove you to play for your country?
Started when I could walk! Played in goal from 6 years old. Started at Kirkcaldy HC but moved to Inverleith in 1998 where I won 3 outdoor and 2 indoor Scottish Cups and played National 1 until 2005.
In 2005 I moved to Kelburne, won 2 leagues, 2 Scottish Cups, 2 Euro Playoffs, 2006 ‘B’ Division Europeans and finished 7th in 2007 ‘A’ Division. Now I’m back at Inverleith to help take the club to the top. I was part of the 2006 Commonwealth Games team in Melbourne and have played for Scotland since 2003.
The thing that drives me most is my desire to be the best GK in the world, and to help Scotland achieve greatness on both the European and World stage.
