Great Britain women lost 2-0 to Australia in the 5/6 play-off but finished three places above their pre-tournament ranking and achieved their best finish at an Olympic Games since 1996. GB men condemned Korea to their heaviest defeat of the tournament winning 5-2 over the 2000 silver medallists to achieve a fifth-place finish which is the best overall performance at an Olympic Games since the gold medal winning side in 1988.
Goalkeeper Alistair McGregor has been named by Great Britain Hockey as its Athlete of the Year 2008.
Three of Great Britain’s Olympic athletes have been listed among the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) nominees for its Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.
Great Britain Hockey has today announced the men’s and women’s youth training squads (Under 21 age group) in preparation for the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
With two British officials involved in Bronze medal matches as well as appearances in a semi final and three playoff matches, Britain’s officials showed that they are up there with the best in the world.
The BBC will show both of Great Britain's playoff matches live as well as the Bronze and Gold medal matches from both the men's and the women's tournaments.
