BAN BLADED FOOTWEAR at PEFFERMILL, COUNTESSWELLS & MILLERSTON
Further to our memo earlier this month (7.2.07), we write to update you on the proposal to BAN bladed hockey footwear at Peffermill. We believe that bladed boots damage the artificial pitches (bladed football boots have been banned since 2000), so we have imposed a BAN on such hockey footwear as a precaution and with immediate effect. This action has the full knowledge and support of the SHU. We have not taken this decision lightly. As a facility provider, we want to do all we can to provide the best possible playing surfaces for our users. It is also imperative that we prolong the life of the carpets to a high standard for as long as possible. There is visible pitch wear and tear, but we are undertaking some controlled tests on both pitches to inform our position. In the meantime, we recently met with representatives from ASICS Europe, who are currently investigating different footwear models on different types of surface. They are also pressing for independent research sanctioned by the international hockey federation (FIH) to be undertaken in Australia. We await the outcome of this research with interest. In the meantime, no bladed footwear, regardless of brand, is acceptable on the artificial pitches until further notice. A sample of a bladed or "cleated" hockey boot is available to inspect at Peffermill. We take this opportunity to clarify that the ASICS Gel Hockey Gold is ONE example of a bladed boot but the ASIC Blackheath or ASICS Lethal are not. As regular users of the artificial surfaces at Peffermill, we seek your support and ask you to pass on this memo to both your players AND opposing teams. This action has been driven by our desire to uphold our commitment to top quality sports facility provision. We are sure you support our stance. Please speak with a member of Peffermill staff if you would like further information. The
following venues have now confirmed that they have banned bladed footwear:- COUNTESSWELLS, ABERDEEN, MILLERSTON, GLASGOW and PEFFERMILL, EDINBURGH.
CHANGE OF CLUB NAME PROCEDURES

Any change of name during the close-season shall not incur a fee.
SHU ETHICS MANUAL / CHILD PROTECTION
The Scottish Hockey Union Limited (SHU) is committed to organising the sport of hockey within a strict ethical framework. The values that the SHU holds can be stated as:-
-
A sport that values “fair play”.
-
A sport that is free from doping.
-
A sport that provides a safe environment for young and vulnerable people.
-
An equitable sport where everyone can participate to the best of their abilities whether that is as a player, coach, umpire, official or other volunteer.
To ensure these values are upheld, the SHU organises its activities with regards to a number of codes and policies as found in the SHU Ethics Manual. The SHU has recently completed updating our Ethics Manual. This includes minor changes to most areas and a major revision of the Child Protection Policy. This Manual can be accessed through the SHU website link
