World Masters

Scotland Over 40's made a "Guest" appearance at the World Masters Tournament being held over 10 days in Birmingham. Due to last minute changes to playing schedule imposed by organisers, we missed out on games against New Zealand and a chance to "put one over" on England.

Early on Saturday morning the Scots took their places for the first time in Vets History against an Australian team including five past Olympians. The Australians started at a furious pace with a physical edge to their game that took the Scots by surprise.......several players being introduced to the Astroturf at very close quarters. A flashing move from one end of the park to another led to a first goal early on and although the Scots rallied well, they soon found themselves 2-0 down courtesy of a well taken penalty corner.

Rather than sit back  the Scots took the game to the Australians and were rewarded when good work from Billy McIntosh following a Penalty corner was touched in by Stephen Springthorpe.

The second half saw Scotland play some excellent flowing hockey with Peter Lelliott on the right causing the Australians all sorts of problems. The Australians were as expected extremely dangerous on the break and with five minutes to go a Scottish attack floundered and the Australians cruised up-field to leave a defiant Scott Chisholm beaten and end the scoring at 3-1.

8:30am Sunday - the Scots turned in an excellent first half performance to lead Italy 4-0 with goals from Russell Benzies, Billy McIntosh, Roy Kennedy & Stephen Springthorpe. The second half was a dour affair with the Italians scoring from a Penalty corner and Benzies and Colin MacBeth adding two more for Scotland to make the Final score 6-1.

The Scots were invited to join the International Masters for future events including World Masters in Hong Kong in 2009 and the possibility of a one-off tournament in India next year.
