U18 Club Cup Results
This season’s national youth hockey competitions got off to a thrilling start at the U18 Club Cup qualifying tournaments on Sunday 19 September.
U18 Girls Cup
At a sunny Peffermill, the four pool winners in the Girls’ competition were: Grange, GHK, Western Wildcats and Inverleith – but only after high drama. In the morning, Grange, Cala Edinburgh and Perthshire all finished on 5 points in Pool D with every match between them being drawn. Grange finished top on goal difference (by 2 goals) after a 7-0 win against Clydesdale Western, scoring six second-half goals. Cala were runners up ahead of the Perth girls on goal difference by beating the Glaswegians 4-0.
It was more straightforward in Pool C, where GHK beat Fjordhus Reivers 3-1 and Grove Menzieshill 2-0 to earn their place in the semi-finals. The Borderers finished runners-up after a 5-2 win against the Dundonians.
In the afternoon, five of the six matches in an incredibly tight Pool A were draws, four of them 1-1. Western Wildcats triumphed after a 1-0 win against Gordonians; a 1-1 draw v Uddingston; and an exciting 0-0 draw with Watsonians. Uddingston edged the Capital team to be second on number of goals scored after three 1-1 draws.
Pool B also went to the wire with Inverleith beating Granite City Wanderers 3-0 in the final match. They had started with a 4-0 win v Highland and a 1-0 win v Kelburne. The Aberdonians had also won their first two games, 1-0 v Kelburne and 2-0 v Highland. The Inverness girls will have enjoyed the long journey home after a hard-fought 2-1 win against the Paisley team gave them third place.
The semi-final draw is: Grange v Inverleith; GHK v Western Wildcats. Dates to be agreed with all teams, with winners playing in the Girls’ cup final on 12 November at Peffermill.
U18 Boys Cup
Over at Mary Erskine’s, the Boys’ Pool B went to the last match to decide the winners. Grange scored three second-half goals from Cameron Miller, Jack Roddam & Xavax Cordero to beat Watsonians 3-0. The Stags had earlier beaten Inverleith 8-0 and Grove Menzieshill 5-0 to earn their place in the final. The maroons were runners-up with wins over Inverleith (4-0) and Grove Menzieshill (1-0). Third place went to the Taysiders with a 9-1 win against the purple robes.
In the Boys’ Pool A at Titwood in Glasgow, Perthshire triumphed after a thriller against Kelburne. The Renfrewshire team were in pole position at half time with a 2-1 lead but the Perth boys hit back to edge it 4-3. They finished with a 100% record and 10 goals after 3-1 wins v Clydesdale and Uddingston. Kelburne were runners-up after beating Uddingston 2-0 and a 1-1 draw with Clydesdale. And Uddingston’s 2-1 win against the Titwood outfit gave them 3rd place.
Grange will play Perthshire in the Boys’ cup final on Friday 12 November at Peffermill.
Thank you to all teams and coaches for their participation in this season’s competition, and to all umpires for a high standard of officiating.
