Restart a Heart: Online CPR Workshop Mon 22nd Nov. 2022

In August, Scottish Hockey launched a partnership with the British Heart Foundation and has been working closely with the charity since then to progress the partnership. Discussions have taken on greater significance over the last few weeks as we have become aware of two members of the Scottish Hockey family who were taken seriously ill with heart-related problems.

This included a member of Clydesdale Hockey Club collapsing at a pre-season friendly (which required both CPR and a defibrillator to be administered on pitch, by teammates and spectators).

Thankfully, despite the seriousness of the situations, the speed of treatment in both cases has meant that both Scottish Hockey members are now recovering well after stays in Hospital.

Clydesdale has been very proactive over the last month and set up a justgiving page to raise funds for a defibrillator which can be installed for use when their clubhouse is closed. Scottish Hockey is delighted to hear that they have smashed their fundraising target of £2000 and are now in the process of purchasing a defibrillator.

Understandably, given the coverage of these incidents, the Regional Development Team has fielded several queries from clubs across Scotland regarding both CPR and access to defibrillators.  Therefore, in the lead up to Restart a Heart Day this Saturday (16th Oct), we are delighted to announce the following as part of the initial phase of our partnership with the British Heart Foundation:

 

Free-of-charge ONLINE CPR WORKSHOP – Mon 22nd November

Laura Stockwell from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) will be running an online CPR workshop FREE for club members on Monday 22nd November 2021 at 7pm on Zoom.  Details on the workshop can be found below:

 

Only 1 in 10 people survive an out of hospital cardiac arrest in Scotland. It can happen to anyone, at any time.

Knowing CPR could make all the difference.

Here at Scottish Hockey, we are very keen to help the BHF on their mission to triple survival rates from cardiac arrests and create a nation of lifesavers – getting more people trained up in CPR.

We want to train as many Scottish Hockey members in CPR as possible. This Restart a Heart Day, we are asking Scottish Hockey members to become a club of lifesavers by joining our virtual CPR session on Monday 22nd November.

What is Restart a Heart Day?

The Resuscitation Council UK along with the British Heart Foundation, British Red Cross, St John Ambulance, NHS Ambulance Service and Saving Lives for Scotland all work together to help raise awareness of cardiac arrest and teach CPR.

Why is it important?

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It’s a life-saving medical procedure which is given to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It helps to pump blood around the person’s body when their own heart cannot.
