Scotland squad named for Women’s Indoor Championship II in Spain
Scotland has announced a strong squad for Women’s Indoor Championship II in Ourense (ESP) at Pazo dos Deportes on 21-23 January 2022.
The Tartan Hearts will face Poland; Ireland; Switzerland; Belgium; Croatia; and Spain at the tournament as they battle for promotion to the top table of European indoor hockey.
The squad is a mix of experienced players and some new faces with five of the newly capped players who played Ireland in December making the final squad. There will also be a new cap for Heather McEwan.
Iain Strachan, head coach of Scotland’s indoor women’s team, said:
“The squad is one training session away from this year’s Nations Indoor Championships II and given the circumstances prevalent around the world at the moment we have given ourselves a chance to do Scotland proud.
“Everyone has worked extremely hard over the short indoor season and shown a huge desire to understand the game plans and improve their skills.
“This year we travel to Ourense in Spain. Initially the competition was split into two pools with our current ranking giving us a favourable draw. Unfortunately Lithuania have had to withdraw meaning the competition has changed to a round robin event with all teams playing each other.
“This might not sound like much but the three favoured teams; Spain; Switzerland and Belgium were all in the other pool and that meant we could only face two of them instead of having to play all three in the new format. That said we will be hoping to give them all a tough game and be at the business end of the tournament come Sunday.”
