Scotland women lose close match with Australia
A fourth quarter winner saw Scotland women defeated 2-1 by World number three ranked Australia in the first of two test matches in Eindhoven.
It was a competitive opening to the contest, and it was Australia who scored in the second quarter with a back post finish to make it 1-0, but Scotland equalised five minutes later. A ball down the left side, and along the left baseline, found its way to Sarah Jamieson who smashed it into the top right corner. 1-1.
The third quarter saw Australia increase their tempo, putting Scotland under pressure, and making the Scottish pressing game a struggle.
In the final quarter Scotland was more on the front foot but it would be the Aussies who would snatch the victory. An overhead into the circle led to a corner opportunity, which was converted to make it 2-1.
A late Scotland surge saw them created a couple of good chances to equalise but the goal would evade them and Australia took the victory.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “All-in-all we were pleased with the first half but it’s tough to live with the tempo of the world’s number three ranked team, and it’s a brilliant opportunity for us to keep getting better.
“To be disappointed not to hold on for a result and go down 2-1 is a sign of progress, but we want to kick on and improve. For over ten players in our team it was the first time they ever played a team of that calibre, so we need to take the learnings and move forward.”
