Another solid win for Scotland women over Wales in Durham

Scotland women made it two wins from two as they beat Wales 5-2 in Durham in another positive performance. It’s a fourth win on the bounce for the Scots who have now won six out of their last seven games.

With an excellent intensity Scotland took a firm grip of the game from the start.

The opening goal of the game was a screamer and it came from Sarah Jamieson for Scotland. From the right side of the circle Jamieson cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Scotland ended the first quarter with their second goal and it was a welcomed strike for Louise Campbell on her second match since returning from injury. The ball was fired into the D from the left side and Campbell did well to get low and deflect the ball home for 2-0.

In the second quarter it was Fiona Semple’s turn to get in on the goal scoring act. Semple ran across the right baseline and managed to pop the ball over the goalkeeper from a tight angle to make it 3-0.

Aside from the goals there were some notable performances in the game. Ruth Blaikie, in one of her first games for Scotland, had a very composed performance while Katie Robertson was the driving force behind Scotland’s play.

Wales pulled one back in the second half when they were awarded a penalty flick, which was converted well into the bottom left corner.

Immediately Scotland struck back. From a penalty corner the ball was slipped left and returned to the injector who picked out Semple to deflect home for her second and Scotland’s fourth. 4-1.

Early in the final quarter Wales scored again from an open play deflection, but again, Scotland struck straight back and Heather McEwan deflected home from a penalty corner to make it 5-2 and complete the scoring.

Head coach Chris Duncan said, “It’s great to get another win – that’s four on the trot now, and six wins in our last seven games. We’re playing well and getting into a good winning habit.

“We started really well today but our intensity didn’t last for the whole game, which we’ll look to improve on as we want to be more ruthless. What was really pleasing was how we reacted every time Wales scored, and it was great to see us strike back each time.

“We’re looking to improve every game we play and tomorrow we have the chance to win three from three, and keep our winning streak going strong.”
