Back in Europe – all three Scottish sides win

It was a great return to Europe as all three Scots sides clocked up wins.

CLYDESDALE WESTERN 4 SV ARMINEN (AUSTRIA) 1

First up were Clydesdale Western at the EuroHockey Club Challenge 11 in Alanya and the Glasgow club served up a 4-1 victory to go top of their pool. The Ukrainian side TSOP Kolos Boryspol were the other victors with a 1-0 win over France`s Stade Francais.

Not a very auspicious start when Maxine Collien put the Austrians a goal up in only seven minutes. But Clydesdale returned to level terms with an open play strike by Emma McGregor early in the second quarter, and that was the score at the interval.

But Clydesdale finally got their noses in front with a penalty corner conversion from Scotland striker Fiona Semple. There was not no looking back as Annabelle Ballantyne made it 3-1 with only ten minutes left. The game was now well won and the icing on the cake was added by Heather Lang in the final minute for a comfortable victory in the end.

Coach Derek Forsyth said: “It`s a good start to the tournament under the circumstances. The girls dealt very well with the extremely warm conditions and had to adapt their game to the very slow pitch.”

Clydesdale now take on French side Stade Francais on day two in their second pool match, they lost 1-0 to Kolos Boryspol from Ukraine in an earlier match today.

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY 2 ROTWEISS WETTINGEN (SWITZERLAND) 1

Edinburgh University left it late to see off Swiss side Rotweiss Wettingen in the other pool, with eight minutes left the score stood at 1-1, but up stepped Sophie Hinds to seal the five points on offer with a 2-1 win.

The first half was heading for a goalless conclusion but Ria Muller broke the deadlock for the Swiss. However, within seconds the students were level when Itske Hooftman levelled at a penalty corner.

Coach Sam Judge remarked: “I was really pleased with the win, always important to win your first game as there`s so many unknowns at these tournaments.”

On day two the students take on host side Gaziantep Polisgucu.

WESTERN 4 SLAGELSE (DENMARK) 1

Western celebrated their return to European competition for the first time in eleven years with a 4-1 win over Danish side Slagelse in their opening pool match in Geneva.

It took Western only five minutes to seize the initiative with a penalty corner strike by Andrew McConnell. The same player added a second from open play towards the end of the first quarter.

The result of the contest was effectively sealed when Western captain Rob Harwood added a third in the second quarter…and that is how it stood at half-time.

Further goals failed to flow in the second half and Slagelse managed to pull one back through Nikolaj Christensen. But any revival was stifled by Fraser Moran, he returned from the sin bin to fire home an open play goal to confirm Western`s victory.

Coach Vishal Marwaha said: “We played well in the first quarter and the last quarter The bit in the middle was a little disjointed Winning the game was the most important thing and we did that convincingly.”

The Auchenhowie side have no game on day two due to the pool being reduced to only three teams.
