Byers winner gives Grove Menzieshill Scottish Cup success

Grove Menzieshill won the Men’s Arthur McKay Scottish Cup with a dramatic 4-3 win over defending champions Glynhill Hotel Kelburne at Peffermill today.
A last minute goal from Scotland international Gavin Byers sent Chris Anderson’s side and their supporters into raptures as they won the trophy for the first time since 1989.
The match got off to a blistering start with three goals inside the first five minutes; Grove Menzieshill’s Paul Martin opened the scoring inside ninety seconds before Kelburne’s Jonny Christie found an equaliser immediately following the re-start to make it 1-1 in the second minute.
Two minutes later the Paisley side were awarded a penalty corner for a foot infringement inside the circle.  Scott Sutherland stepped up to unleash a fierce drive past Andrew Ross to make it 2-1 and give Kelburne the lead for the first time in the match.
In the 12th minute however, Anderson’s side were back on level terms when Oliver James’ tidy finish evaded Mark Fulton’s dive and the ball nestled in the back of the net to produce a 2-2 scoreline.
Kelburne then went close to re-taking the lead on two occasions; Mark Ralph’s penalty corner drive flashed just wide of the target before a neat one-two between the Christie brothers saw the ball skewed past the right hand post.
In the 26th minute, Ross Stott made space for himself on the edge of the circle and his shot-come-cross narrowly failed to make a connection with Martin’s stick right in front of goal.
Three minutes later, Ross made a great save from Jack McKenzie to keep the score at 2-2 and it proved crucial; just before half-time, Gavin Byers dived brilliantly to divert a low ball into the top right hand corner past Fulton to make it 3-2 in the 33rd minute.
Following the start of the second half, it was Kelburne who looked the hungrier and they got themselves back on parity in the 43rd minute when Jonny Christie found Lee Morton in space and his dink over Ross found the top left hand corner of the goal to give his side the equalising goal at 3-3.
Opportunities fell to both sides to find a fourth goal; Michael Christie just missed the target with a reverse stick and Jonny Christie’s deft deflection went just over the bar for Kelburne, and Fulton produced a magnificent save from Martin to deny the Taysiders.
With the match seemingly destined for running penalties, Grove Menzieshill mustered the final ounces of energy to produce a blistering counter-attack which saw Byers bearing down on Fulton in a one-on-one situation. The Scotland midfielder kept his composure to slam the ball past Fulton to net the winning goal and enable Grove Menzieshill to take the trophy back to Tayside for the first time in 24 years with a 4-3 victory.
