Clean sweep in Durham as Scotland women come from behind to beat Wales
Scotland women showed another side of themselves to battle back from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 against Wales in Durham in another positive performance.
The victory gave Scotland a clean sweep in the three-match series, and it’s a fifth win in a row for the Scots who have now won seven out of their last eight games.
Scotland came out fast and piled the pressure on Wales from the outset. They thought they’d scored the opening goal after winning the ball back in a high press, before a slick three-pass move allowed Sarah Jamieson to fire into the net – or so she thought. The shot was judged to have gone wide amid claims that it appeared to have gone through a hole in the net.
The incident knocked Scotland off their rhythm allowing Wales to go 1-0 up at the end of the first quarter through a penalty corner deflection.
Wales then went 2-0 ahead in the second quarter through an open play strike to finish the first half in a comfortable position.
Scotland started the second half how they began the first and pulled one back early in the third quarter. Jamieson took the ball on the right side, beat two players, and picked out Bronwyn Shields who touched the ball over the goalkeeper into the roof of the net.
A few minutes later and Scotland equalised. A penalty corner was deflected home by McKenzie Bell to pull it back to 2-2.
Sarah Robertson was colossal in the performance while Heather McEwan put in a great shift defending from forward areas of the pitch.
It was the captain Robertson who sealed the win when she converted a rebound in the final quarter to make it 3-2.
Scotland could have scored more having won eight penalty corners in the match, and created some excellent openings, but their tremendous second half performance was enough to turn the game around and clock up another victory on the team’s winning streak.
Head coach Chris Duncan said, “I’m really proud of the players. It’s not easy to go two goals behind and come back to win, and it speaks volumes of the players. We made it tough on ourselves but we showed a different side of ourselves as well, and having pulled it back to 2-2 it was great to see us not settle at that – we didn’t come here to draw. Out of all the wins we’ve had recently this might be the one I’m most proud of.”
