Clydesdale head the division but Watsonians and Wildcats are also unbeaten

Clydesdale Western head the women`s division 1 table with wins over Edinburgh CALA, Dundee Wanderers and finally Edinburgh University, but they have played a game more over Watsonians and Wildcats who won their two games.

A hat-trick from Amy Snelle got the programme going as Dundee Wanderers scored a 4-1 win over Edinburgh University. Snelle popped in a couple in the opening seven minutes, to be followed by a third from Lucy Williamson for a three goal lead at the interval. The Edinburgh students did pull one back eight minutes through Rachel Sheil but a further strike from Snelle sealed the three points for the Taysiders.

Clydesdale Western galloped into an eightsome reel without reply against newly promoted Edinburgh Cala. It was three at half-time, a penalty corner from Anna Hoolaghan started the scoring, Fiona Semple doubled the tally and that was followed by another set piece from Fran Lonergan.

The second half was a procession of goals starting with Carly Bisset and followed by Margery Justice, Millie Steiger, Bronwyn Shields and finally Tamilla Matchett.

Wildcats got their claws into Grove Menzieshill with an 8-1 mauling. A flurry of goals in the opening four minutes, Lucy Findlay opened for the Cats, Emma Tennant levelled for the Dundonians, captain Becky Bruce made it 2-1 for the Auchenhowie side. By the interval Zara Kennedy had advanced the Cats tally to 3-1.

The Cats added to their score in the second half with Lucy Findlay the main tormentor with another three goals to advance her personal tally to four, Zara Kennedy got her own second with Kate Holmes getting the other.

Despite the disappointment of their opening defeat the Edinburgh students recovered their composure and beat Edinburgh CALA 4-0 in their second outing of the day. It was 2-0 at the break, Kathryn Meehan opened in six minutes and Harriet Williams added another from the spot. Two further strikes for the students in the second half through Rachel Sheil and Katie Brett.

Watsonians opened their title-chasing account with a 5-0 win over city neighbours Inverleith. Katie Stott set the scene with a goal in only two minutes, and by the interval the tally had gone up to three with further strikes by Emily Dark at a penalty corner and Sarah Jamieson. Two goals inside a minute early in the second half from Dark again and Katherine Holdgate completed the scoring.

Clydesdale continued their impressive form with their second victory of the day – 5-1 over Dundee Wanderers. The catalyst was a hat-trick from former Scotland striker Fiona Semple.

Semple opened the champions account from the spot and then a penalty corner, and that was followed by an open play goal from Holly Steiger for a half-time score of 3-0. A minute into the second half the result was effectively sealed by a goal from Bronwyn Shields for a 4-1 lead. A penalty corner goal from Wanderers` Lucy Williamson was little more than a consolation, and then Semple added her own third in the final minute.

In their second outing of the day Watsonians went on the rampage with a 22-1 win over Grove Menzieshill – that`s certainly improved their goal difference! The writing was on the wall when doubles from Sarah Jamieson and Mairi Drummond put the Edinburgh side four up inside the opening four minutes.

Without dwelling too long on the details, suffice it to say that in the goal avalanche Sarah Jamieson was top with a magnificent seven, Katherine Holdgate was one behind with six, Mairi Drummond got four and Emily Dark collected three. It would be wrong not to mention Grove`s Emma Tennant who scored the consolation of all consolations in the second half.

Wildcats also made an impact on their second win of the day by seeing off Inverleith 5-0 to occupy third place in the table. After eleven minutes in the game the Cats were three up, Rachel Osborne opened the scoring, Kate Holmes from the spot doubled the tally and Aspen Cumming added the third. The second half saw two further goals for the Cats through Holmes and Osborne again.

In the final game of the day Clydesdale moved into pole position with a 7-0 win over Inverleith, although they have played a game more. This time Millie Steiger was the chief tormentor with two goals in the first half, Bronwyn Shields got the other as the Titwood-based side moved into a three goal lead at the interval. There were four more goals for Clydesdale in the second half, Steiger got her hat-trick, Shields got her second of the game, while Tamilla Matchett and Carly Bisset were also on target.
