Clydesdale Western are in front with Watsonians and Dundee Wanderers just behind with a game in hand

Clydesdale Western took advantage of their three game day in the women`s indoor first division at DISC to take a three point lead at the top of the first division, but champions Watsonians and Dundee Wanderers also won their games to be three points behind but with a game less played. So it`s all to play for in the next round of games in January.

Dundee Wanderers started the ball rolling at DISC and proceeded to finish with a 5-2 win over Edinburgh Hockey Club. But it was the latter who looked the brighter with a 2-1 half-time lead, Cheryl Valentine and Angie Davie were on target while Amy Snelle replied for the Taysiders.

But the second half was a different story as Wanderers scored four without reply through a couple from Ruth Gamble, Snelle again, and Jess Martin to take the three points.

The Edinburgh clash between University and Inverleith ended in a 4-2 win for the latter. It took Inverleith 19 minutes to get their noses in front through Jenn Veitch. After 34 minutes the score had advanced to 2-2 with Jess Ross and Katie Brett scoring for the students while Marnie Richmond sunk a penalty corner for Inverleith. In the last six minutes Inverleith struck twice through Veitch again and finally Sophie Gray.

Clydesdale Western, under the coaching brief of Fiona Semple, looked ominously strong and efficient with a 8-1 win over Edinburgh Hockey Club. But it took the Titwood side 18 minutes to break the deadlock through a penalty corner conversion by Tamilla Matchett.

However, the floodgates opened in the second half, Matchett got another two for her hat-trick, Kayleigh Justice got one while her sister Margery scored twice, Frances Lonergan and finally Fiona Semple completed the tally. Cheryl Valentine got a late consolation for Edinburgh.

Dundee Wanderers scored their second victory of the session with a 4-1 win over Inverleith – the catalyst was all four goals came from Jess Martin with one reply for Inverleith.

And finally the champions Watsonians entered the fray and were 5-0 winners over Edinburgh University – and again there was a four goal striker in Sarah Jamieson with Emily Dark sinking a penalty corner.

Like Wanderers, Clydesdale Western recorded their second win of the day and it was a handsome nine goal triumph over Hillhead on their first outing of the day. Top scorer this time was player/coach Fiona Semple with a hat-trick while Tamilla Matchett added another couple to her previous total. Also on the scoresheet were Lucy Williamson, Kayleigh and Margery Justice and Millie Steiger.

Edinburgh University then picked up their first win of the season with a 5-0 score over Edinburgh HC. It was two at the interval through a spot conversion by Ruth Blaikie and one from Zara Kennedy. The students added three more after the break through Blaikie and Kennedy again and also Freya Jubb.

In their second match against Wildcats the champions Watsonians were again in fine form with an 8-2 victory. After only five minutes a double from Katie Crawford put the champions on the right path. Alex Stuart pulled one back for Wildcats but it only encouraged the Edinburgh side to score more – an Emily Dark double, Sarah Jamieson and Katherine Holdgate were the scorers. In the meantime Lucy Findlay did manage to find the net at the other end. So it was 6-2 at the interval – game effectively over.

Emily Dark did managed to add two more for the champions in the second half, bringing her own total to four.

Clydesdale moved to the top of the table with a 9-0 win over Inverleith – they now have a three point lead over Inverleith and Dundee Wanderers, but with a game more played.

In the goal avalanche Millie Steiger emerged top scorer with four, Margery Justice got two and the others came from Fiona Semple, Lucy Williamson and Kayleigh Justice.
