Double comeback victories for Clydesdale Western in Alanya

CLYDESDALE WESTERN 3 SV ARMINEN (AUSTRIA) 2

CLYDESDALE WESTERN 4 BUCKINGHAM (ENGLAND) 2

Spirited comebacks were the order of the day for Clydesdale Western as they clawed their way to back-to-back victories over SV Arminen from Austria and English champions Buckingham on the opening day at the women`s EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy in Alanya.

Consequently, the quest for medals is very much on the agenda of coach Wendy Justice if Clydesdale`s form can be maintained tomorrow on the second day of competition

Clydesdale got off to the worst of starts by conceding a goal in only two minutes through a penalty corner strike from Marie Hahnenkamp and that was the score at the interval.

The Austrians doubled their tally at the start of the third quarter with an open play strike from Maxine Collien. That setback seemed to stimulate Clydesdale into scoring action, within two minutes good inter-play between the Justice sisters and Millie Steiger, Kayleigh`s first shot was saved by the keeper but she quickly dispatched the rebound into the net..

Just before the end of the quarter Louise Redpath continued the spirited comeback with an equaliser, a flowing move saw Fiona Semple pass the ball on to Redpath to shoot low into the net, and it was game on!

Just as a share of the points looked the most likely outcome, with only four minutes left Clydesdale were awarded their first penalty corner of the match, in a well-rehearsed move Margery Justice fired the ball towards Holly Steiger to deflect into the net for the belated winner.

Clydesdale held on to their belated lead and collected the five points on offer.

It was a similar story in the Buckingham game, Natasha James put the English side one up just before the end of the first quarter, and that was the score line at the interval.

Six minutes into the third quarter Millie Steiger levelled at a penalty corner after a switch from Margery Justice. But within a minute an open play goal from Rebecca van Arrowsmith restored Buckingham`s slender lead after a bit of a scramble in the circle.

Then came another spirited comeback. It started with seven minutes left when Fiona Semple levelled at 2-2 with a powerful flick at another set piece.

That was followed by a bizarre 36th minute. Semple and van Arrowsmith both received yellow cards and then Kayleigh Justice scored from the spot after an illegal stop on the line by an Austrian defender to put Clydesdale ahead for the first time in the contest.

Then the icing on the cake in the closing minutes with another penalty corner conversion from Margery Justice to seal another five points and propel the Scots to pole position in the table.

After the double victories, Clydesdale coach Wendy Justice said: “Two tough games, but two great wins.

“After a very nervous start the team have worked incredibly hard for each other and showing trust and great determination. The first game saw some excellent indoor goals with great passing and movement off the ball.

“The second showed confidence in our set piece moves with all four goals coming from corners.”
