Dumfries Hockey Club building leaders

Tuesday 16 March saw a group of Dumfries Hockey Club Youth Section volunteers start along the pathway to become Scottish Hockey Leaders.

At an online interactive session the group was led by tutor Gladys McClymont through modules on fun and safe hockey sessions; the Golden Thread; Scottish Hockey’s Player Pathway, and game formats; along with an introduction to planning for and running sessions and festivals (becoming a Games Instructor).

Scottish Hockey’s West Regional Development Manager, Kelly Fillingham, also attended the session to support and contribute.

The group at Dumfries Hockey Club now plans to complete the practical part of the course on-the-pitch over the next few weeks.

For Dumfries Hockey Club it began with Gladys attending the iKnow month tutor training workshop. Now club president Margaret Miller will attend next week’s tutor training supported by Scottish Hockey, which is aimed at building a pool of hockey leaders across Scotland.

Scottish Hockey’s North Regional Development Manager Mark Pain said, “Scottish Hockey’s Leaders course has always been a very popular entry level course for those looking to get into coaching.  We have now updated course content not only to fit better with the GB Coaching offer and our own player pathway, it also now includes content on session management and basic umpiring as well as coaching skills.  We hope this means it will attract a wider range of participants from existing players, young leaders and parents.

“We have had a very positive response to the offer of training tutors within clubs and schools to so far, which hopefully means more courses can be run on demand as clubs and school require.  Three tutor training courses have already been fully booked, and an additional date is now scheduled for April.”
