Edinburgh University aiming for back to back wins against Clydesdale Western

Edinburgh University and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western will lock horns again for the second weekend running when both sides clash on Saturday at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre for a place against Grove Menzieshill in the Aberdeen Asset Management National League Grand Final on Sunday.

The students came out on top last week, edging the Titwood outfit by the odd goal in three with a 2-1 win. However, Clydesdale Western responded with a running penalties win over Dundee Wanderers last Sunday to create a rematch.

The most recent form guide favours the capital outfit, but with both sides containing a strong mix of Scotland senior and junior international players, it will come down to who handles the pressure best on the day. Clydesdale Western have last season’s experience of winning the Scottish Cup Final against their university foes, so this may tilt the balance in their direction.

The winners go on to face Grove Menzieshill in Sunday’s Grand Final at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre, with the title all to play for. Neither side will find the task easy should they reach the final; the Taysiders have been in imperious form throughout the whole of the league campaign with 17 wins out of 18 in the regular season.

Charlotte Jones’ side will be strong favourites to retain their title for yet another season.

In Pool A, Glynhill Kelburne are the only side guaranteed of a place in next season’s top flight after two play-off wins last weekend. On Saturday, they face a GHK side aiming to secure a point that would keep them out of the relegation play-off on Sunday.

However, Western Wildcats will hope Kelburne can do them a favour by beating their Glasgow rivals and a win against AAM Merlins Gordonians may see the Auchenhowie steal second place and Division 1 safety.

Grange EL are resigned to a relegation play-off no matter the outcome of their match against CALA Edinburgh on Saturday.

Their city rivals on the other hand require a win and hope there is a winner between Watsonians and Hillhead Ladies if they are to avoid the relegation play-off on Sunday.

If the three sides finish level, then goal difference will separate the sides with Watsonians in a strong position having recorded a healthy goals for and against tally.

Expect a close finish.
