Eye catching results in the premiership

There were some outstanding goal feats today, teenager Fraser Heigh scored a double hat-trick in Grange`s win over Hillhead, Wildcats scored seven against Clydesdale, while in the women`s league Sarah Jamieson also notched six in Watsonians` 15 against Erskine Stewarts Melville while a hat-trick by Fiona Semple was the catalyst in Clydesdale`s 4-3 win over Wildcats.

The men`s game of the day at Auchenhowie was a ten-goal feast, but it was Wildcats who took the honours with seven to Clydesdale`s three. The result keeps Wildcats in pole position in the Premiership, but only by a single goal from Grange.

The fist half was a fairly even affair which ended 2-2, there were doubles each for Wildcats` Fraser Calder from open play and Clydesdale`s Andrew Allan from penalty corners.

But the second half belonged to the Wildcats. The home side advanced to 5-2 with goals from Jonny Christie, this was the former Kelburne striker`s first goal for Wildcats, Adam Mackenzie from a penalty corner and Rob Harwood.

Clydesdale`s Jamie Green brought the score back to 5-3 but any whiff of a comeback was stifled by further Wildcats goals from Callum Duke and Harwood again.

Wildcats coach Vishal Marwaha said: “This was an improvement from last weekend, but we have still work to do in defence and to create more outcomes up front. On the positive side to win 7-3 against such a strong side as Clydesdale was definitely a good result.”

Grange`s confrontation with Hillhead at Fettes turned out to be the Fraser Heigh show, the youngster notched a double hat-trick in a 8-2 victory for the home side. The Grange teenager has now scored eight goals in two outings – good shooting!

Two goals from open play and one from the spot from Heigh put Grange into a three goal lead in the first half although just before the interval Graeme Campbell pulled one back for Hillhead at a penalty corner.

Heigh continued with his own personal goal avalanche with two penalty corner strikes to advance Grange`s tally to 5-1 early in the second half. Heigh then relented, but not Grange as John McCluskey sunk a rebound at a penalty corner followed by a set piece strike by Charlie Jack to increase Grange`s lead to 7-1.

Back came Heigh for a direct penalty corner strike for 8-1 before Fraser Ward scored a consolation for Hillhead with six minutes left.

Kelburne moved into the top six of the division with their first three points of the season – a 3-1 win over Dundee Wanderers at Glasgow Green. The Paisley scorers were Connor Bain, Ciaran Wilcox and Mikey Nicol. Jamie White scored Wanderers` consolation in the fourth quarter after good work from Luke Sangster.

Dunfermline Carnegie has hit the headlines in their first ever season in the Premiership by taking six points from their first two games, today they went to Tayside and came away with a 3-2 victory – something not many teams have done in recent years.

But it was close and the Fifers have to thank their captain Michael Ross for the winner 30 seconds from the end. The penalty corner broke down but the ball fell to Ross who swept it home for the belated winner.

Menzieshill romped into a two goal lead and looked to be heading for a comfortable victory, but before the interval ex-Taysider Aidan McQuade pulled it back to 2-1 at a penalty corner. That is how the score line stood with seven minutes left, then McQuade struck again at another set piece to level at 2-2. Then came Ross`late winner to continue Carnegie`s fairy tale start to the Premiership.

Edinburgh University started their campaign today against Uddingston and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Guy Rowson opened for the students but within five minutes the Lanarkshire side were level. Alex McGregor was brought down in the circle and Steven Percy stepped up to convert from the spot.

The students pressed for the winner in the final quarter but the combination of stubborn defending by the Uddingston rear guard and some fine saves from keeper Craig Wallace ensured that the Lanarkshire side left Peffermill with a share of the points. .

Clydesdale Western continue to look impressive after a 4-3 win over Wildcats at Auchenhowie, but the result was only sealed in the last two minutes, Heather Lang was the provider leaving Fiona Semple to lift the ball over the keeper for the winner in a seven goal thriller.

Earlier Wildcats moved into a two goal lead but just before the interval through Alex Stuart and Rona Stewart who deflected the ball into the roof of the net. Heather Lang pulled one back after a pass from Ali Eadie. Semple then levelled with a deflection at a penalty corner but Wildcats then made it 3-2 with a direct penalty corner strike from Rachel Bain. However, Clydesdale retaliated with another penalty corner deflection by Semple to be followed by her late winner for her hat-trick.

Watsonians certainly recovered their composure with a 15-1 win over Erskine Stewarts Melville. Scotland striker Sarah Jamieson was on fire with a double hat-trick, Emily Dark scored three, Sarah McKay, Katie and Ellie Stott scored their first goals for the club while the other goals came from Katherine Holdgate, Ellie Wilson and Heather Tait.

In true sporting spirit Watsonians` coach Keith Smith said: “They have a really young team, but they didn`t sit back, they stuck to what they were doing and they`ll get better as the younger ones gain more experience.”

Edinburgh University, started their campaign with a comfortable 5-0 win over Gordonians. Pride of place goes to a hat-trick from Georgia Jones, the other goals came from Katie Robertson and Jenny Walls.

After the game students` coach Sam Judge said: “Lots of chances today, but we need to be more clinical.”

On the other hand, Gordonians` Lyndsey Davidson said: “This was a tough game for Gordonians as there was a small squad due to injuries and covid related absences. Edinburgh University were a strong squad however and we were able to contain the score line to a respectable 5-0 loss. Competitive and fast hockey, but we held our own.”

GHK continue their impressive opening to this season`s campaign with a 2-1 win at Grove and maintain their place at the top of the table following a 2-1 win at Grove. Zara Kennedy opened for the Glasgow side but Grove levelled by the interval. The winner came from a Lucy Williamson penalty corner strike which was blocked and Kenned latched on the the rebound to snatch the winner.

Hillhead will be very satisfied with their 4-3 win at Dundee Wanderers. Emma Blackstock put Hillhead in front only for Isla McRobbie to level at a penalty corner. The Glasgow side then romped intoa 4-1 lead, Blackstock got her hat-trick and Olivia Robertson got the other. Back came Wanderers through Amy Snelle and Jess Martin but not enough to prevent the three points travelling back to Glasgow.

In the final game Glasgow University came away with a 2-1 win at Uddingston, Emily Powell scored for the latter.
