Grange men`s first success in the EuroHockey League

Grange 3 Post SV (Austria) 0

Well, Grange men finally did it…and in some style it has to be said as the team recorded its first win in the EuroHockey League with a comfortable 3-0 win over Austrian side Post SV in Terrassa today.

The victory means that Grange finish a creditable seventh and will pick up some valuable ranking points for next season`s EuroHockey League.

So what did manager Martin Shepherdson have to say? “I’m delighted for the boys. The team have put in a huge effort over the tournament and thoroughly deserved their reward today.”

Perhaps not a game for the purist, but right from the start Grange controlled the flow of the game and reduced Post`s chances to a couple of penalty corners…and that was it.

There were no real chances to either side in the early exchanges

The only excitement was a green card to Albert Rowling. He returned to the fray just when an Austrian defender was caught committing a deliberate push inside the circle, the umpire awarded a penalty and Rowling calmly flicked the ball into the corner of the net for the opener from the spot.

Grange continued to keep the pressure on the Austrians without really troubling their keeper. Then a lapse in defence resulted in an Austrian penalty corner but their effort was easily batted away by David Forrester`s glove.

There was an early chance for Peter Caughey early in the second half but he contrived to miss hit his effort.

But the teenager made amends by winning a penalty corner soon after and Albert Rowling`s flick eluded the Austrian keeper to double Grange`s tally.

At the start of the fourth quarter Post started to put the Grange defence under some pressure to get back into the contest, but without really causing much concern. The Grange defence was in fine form.

The Austrians were then caught short at a breakaway which saw a couple of efforts at goal, but the ball finally fell kindly to Peter Caughey and the teenager calmly tapped it over the line for Grange`s third goal.

The Edinburgh side might have in fact increased their lead in the closing moments. Caughey, who tormented the Austrian defence for most of the game, shot directly at the keeper and then just missed a cross from the right.

Grange comfortably played out the rest of the match as the Austrians seemed resigned to defeat. The Grange players can now celebrate their first win in Europe`s top flight.
