Great performance and great result for Scotland women in Belfast
Scotland women enjoyed a tremendous 5-1 win over Ireland in Belfast in the second of a three-match test series. Scotland won the previous match 2-1 and have already won the series before the final contest on Tuesday.
It was a very quick start by Scotland and it didn’t take long for the Tartan Hearts to see some reward for their effort.
Scotland took the lead through a powerful low finish by Fiona Burnet across the goalkeeper after some good pressure on the Ireland D to make it 1-0.
Before long the Scots doubled their advantage, and it was well deserved.
Scotland went 2-0 ahead in Belfast with a superb finish into the bottom right corner. Scotland linked up well down the left and from the top of the D the ball was hammered home on the reverse by Charlotte Watson.
The second quarter brought another goal for Scotland when the ball was swept home on the rebound to make to 3-0 for Scotland. Some great skill saw the Scots weave through the Irish defence, a good save denied a shot at goal, but Burnet was on hand to scoop the ball into the net.
As half time approached Ireland pulled one back with a powerful shot from the top of the D at a penalty corner. Other than the goal Scotland were never really troubled defensively and led 3-1 at the break.
Scotland started the second half with a goal and it went to 4-1 from a penalty corner rebound. The first effort saw a neat exchange to the right, which was well blocked, but Katie Robertson was there to force the ball home.
Early in the final quarter Scotland went 5-1 ahead through a great solo run and finish into the bottom right corner by Watson.
There were many excellent performances in the Scotland squad; Millie Steiger was composed and solid defensively; Jen Eadie seemed to have so much time on the ball and showed tremendous vision with her passing; and Sarah Robertson showed class throughout the contest.
Scotland could have gone 6-1 ahead but for some good goalkeeping to deny a double effort after some slick play down the left.
In the end it was a tremendous win for the Scots to take the series with back-to-back victories.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “I’m absolutely thrilled with the performance. We started with a great intensity and energy that I’ve never seen before. We won the ball really well, were composed in possession, and rode the wave of our intensity very well.
“As we tired we could have been a little more effective and managed our game a little better, so we do have some polishing still to do, but it’s a really exciting performance. We’re only as good as our next match so we have it all to do again in Tuesday as the series comes to a close.”
