Improved performances for Scotland’s aspiring squads despite defeat to England

In the second match of two Scotland’s Aspiring Girls’ and Boys’ squads took on England at Lilleshall with the girls losing 4-0, while the boys lost 4-1. Both teams performed well despite the score line and showed good improvements on the previous days’ performances.

England 4-0 Scotland Aspiring Girls

Scotland Aspiring Girls’ lost 4-0 away to England in the second of two test matches at Lilleshall.

Despite the score line this was a better Scotland performance with much improved defensive organisation, consistency and intensity.

The Scots were also much more composed on the ball, and played out from defence well, and created some opportunities in the match.

Hannah Young nearly scored for Scotland but was denied by a wonderful save; then from a corner Sophie Anderson had a good effort saved; and then a deflected effort from a powerful ball into the D came close to finding the net.

Like the previous match the home side was clinical and the England forwards took their chances well. Two of the goals were unfortunate from a Scotland perspective with the break of the ball falling kindly for players to finish.

Another good test for a Scotland squad featuring 18 players who hadn’t played together before this weekend, and with pleasing improvements in game two the matches have offered good lessons for the squad to develop on going forward.

England 4-1 Scotland Aspiring Boys

Scotland Aspiring Boys put it a good performance but were defeated 4-1 against England at Lilleshall, in the second game of two. On another day the contest could have very easily been a draw, or even a Scotland victory.

Scotland’s young squad started the game very well and were rewarded with the game’s opening goal. A short corner was converted by Matthew Hughson to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

As the opening quarter came to a close England won a corner of their own, and found the net to make it 1-1 at the break.

England went 2-1 ahead when they scored after winning the ball high up the pitch.

Dan Pearson and Hughson did a great job to use their experience and push Scotland forward.

Pere Caughey was a constant threat for Scotland and could have scored a couple but was met by an on form goalkeeper. In the third quarter Caugey was denied by a last gasp save after the Scots attack stole the ball from the England defence.

England eventually won the game 4-1 but it was an even contest and a big step forward for the development of Scotland Aspiring Boys.
