Intro to Cancer Research UK & Fundraising Workshop – Monday 15th November 2022

You may be aware that today is Stand Up to Cancer Day, a partnership between Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK which raised £18 million in 2019.  Given the developing partnership between Scottish Hockey and Cancer Research UK, we are keen to show our support and help our membership “take the fear out of Cancer”.

Heather Duff, Relationship Manager for Cancer Research UK, has a unique perspective to give to Scottish Hockey’s membership as she was a very active hockey player before being diagnosed with Cancer back in 2014.

Since her initial diagnosis, Heather has been an incredibly active fundraiser for Cancer charities, founding FUCancer and raising over £50,000 through running Stick it to Cancer Hockey Festivals.

Cancer Research UK and Scottish Hockey are keen share Heather’s experience and knowledge on the subject, to help clubs across Scotland support those affected by cancer – either within their membership or the wider local communities, and help increase fundraising to stand up to cancer!

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research and our vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

This year 32,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Scotland and sadly, only half of them will survive the disease for 10 years or more. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Scotland with 1 in 2 people born after 1960, being diagnosed in their lifetime. If we look at these figures in a different way, that is half or 6,500 of Scottish Hockey’s affiliated players. A daunting statistic and why our 4,000 researchers, clinicians, and nurses are working tirelessly to prevent, control and cure all 200 types of cancer. Our vision is to bring forward the day where all cancers are cured. We have made significant progress over the past 40 years, doubling survival rates within that time. With the help of Scottish Hockey, we believe we can relegate cancer forever.

We are so grateful and excited to be working with Scottish Hockey. Now more than ever we need your support and we know that together we will make a huge impact on life saving research.

Stand Up to Cancer UK (Fri 15th October)

Brought to you by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, Stand Up To Cancer is a fundraising campaign that brings the UK together to speed up progress in life-saving cancer research.

Stand Up To Cancer speeds up life-saving cancer research by taking developments in the lab and accelerating them into new tests and treatments for cancer patients who need them. We’ve set ourselves an ambitious target to ensure 3 in 4 people in the UK survive their cancer by 2034.

Stick it to Cancer Hockey Events

Stick it to Cancer (SITC) Hockey festivals are a fun, fancy dress hockey tournament designed to raise funds and awareness for Maggie’s Cancer Centres. SITC will offer hockey teams the opportunity to participate in a Round Robin tournament. Prizes are on offer for the teams who are best dressed, win the tournament and go above and beyond in saying ‘FUCANCER’.
