Jonny Caren appointed Scotland men’s Head Coach and Programme Lead

Scottish Hockey has appointed Jonny Caren as Scotland Men’s National Coach and Programme Lead.

Jonny was assistant coach for Ireland men from 2010-18, and head coach for Ireland U21 men, from 2013-18. During his tenure, Jonny supported in the development of Ireland men’s from 19th in the world to their all time highest world ranking of 9th.

Whilst in post as assistant, Ireland men won Champions Challenge bronze; two back-to-back World League II championship titles; Ireland’s first European Championship bronze medal at London, 2015; achieved the first ever men’s Olympic qualification in Ireland’s history, competing at Rio 2016; and the men’s team’s first World Cup qualification in over two decades at India 2018.

As head coach of Ireland U21 men, Jonny completed two cycles at the Junior European Championships and achieved a Gold Medal in 2014 at Lousada, Portugal, producing over 25 players for the senior programme through his U21 leadership.

Caren said, “Never has there been a more exciting time to work with Scottish Hockey, as the organisation implements its strategy to transition between Reset, Build, Excel. This mantra rings true within the Scottish men’s national programme, with some long-standing senior representatives having retired from international duties over the past two years.

“With this, comes real opportunity for those athletes that have been working hard within the system and for the junior age athletes within the player pathway that are prepared to work hard for a privileged position to represent their country at a senior level.

“With huge shoes to fill after Derek’s immense contribution, over many years to Scottish Hockey, I am both excited and extremely honoured to continue his legacy and help shape the men’s programme for the future.

“Last year’s Commonwealth Games produced some outstanding performances and results for the team and has shown that Scotland, as a nation, has the potential to climb the world rankings and compete against higher ranked teams at European, World and Commonwealth level.

“I am looking forward to leading this talented group of players and staff, through the opportunities and challenges that exist in the coming months, as we prepare for European competition in Dublin in July.”

Performance Programme Manager, Derek Forsyth said, “I am delighted that Jonny has accepted the role of Head Coach to the Scottish men’s team. He has an array of exceptional skills and qualities which align with the organisation mantra of Reset, Build, Excel. I wish him and the squad every success for the future.”
