Last weekend of Premiership fixtures comes to a conclusion

Newly crowned men’s champions Western Wildcats retained their unbeaten record for the season with a 6-1 win at Dunfermline Carnegie.

Coach Vishal Marwaha said: “It`s a huge achievement for the squad, it`s not very often the Premiership winners go through the entire season unbeaten. In fact, even more astonishing is that we remain unbeaten in both the indoor and outdoor leagues – I’m not sure when that last happened.

“Remaining unbeaten is no small feat, the boys were magnificent all season. Our policy of taking one game at a time during the entire season proved successful.

“Now we look forward to the cup final and then on to Europe.”

Fraser Calder opened for Western in the first quarter from a breakaway. That was followed by a double of deflections from Rob Harwood, the first from a cross from the left and the other diverting a shot by Jonny Christie into the net for a 3-0 half-time lead.

The Fifers pulled one back, but the flow of goals from Western continued, following another breakaway Humzah Khan slapped the ball into the net, then Niall Sommerville buried a rebound off the keeper after another Harwood shot, and finally Andrew Webb made it six from the spot.

Grange confirmed their runners-up spot with a 3-1 win over Edinburgh University, Guy Rowson scored for the students from the spot,

Watsonians needed to win at Titwood to leapfrog Clydesdale into fourth place in the table but only came away with a 1-1 draw. It looked promising for the Edinburgh side when Dan Coultas opened with a penalty corner strike that went in off a defender in the second quarter. But Watsonians failed to hold on to their advantage and Andrew Allan levelled for Clydesdale also from a penalty corner for a share of the points, and so it is Clydesdale that retain fourth place.

Inverleith finished top of the lower six competition with an 8-3 win over Grove Menzieshill. Kyle Taylor scored twice but the other goals came from Livio Belotti, Xavax Cordero, James Stuart, Stuart Hatton, Derek Salmond – and the highlight was the strike from Ollie Wilson from a foot from the baseline which flew into the top far corner of the net.

Hillhead continued their recent impressive run with a 5-2 win at Uddingston, there were two goals each for Matt Carder and Fraser Ward while Andrew Black got the other.

The youthful Kelburne side went up to Tayside and came away with a creditable 3-3 draw against Dundee Wanderers, their scorers were Sam Hunt, Jay Berry and Iain Scholefield.

The women`s card was truncated by the international matches in Ireland, the consequential postponement of the crucial GHK v Clydesdale Western match and Gordonians` concession of the game at Uddingston.

Although already relegated Erskine Stewarts Melville recorded their first Premiership win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Grove, both goals came from Jenni McNaught.

Dundee Wanderers and Glasgow University fought out a thrilling 3-3 draw on Tayside, and that with Wanderers having no keeper and only eleven players. Glasgow opened through Dara Devine only for Hannah Young to level after brilliant advantage by the umpire. By the interval Georgia Smith had put the students ahead for the second time.

A Sam Sangster direct shot at a penalty corner levelled at 2-2, but again Glasgow went ahead through Emily Simmers. However, the scoring was not finished with Amy Rowan providing the late equaliser after a pass from Young.
