London Cup provides Scotland’s hockey teams with final Games preparations

Scotland’s final tournament preparations for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games sees both Senior Men and Senior Women squads compete in the Investec London Cup at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 9-13 July.
In the men’s competition, Scotland Senior Men Head Coach Derek Forsyth will lead his side against England, Ireland and South Africa, while Head Coach Gordon Shepherd pits Scotland Senior Women up against England, South Africa and Wales in the women’s competition.
Senior Men show only a single modification from their Games squad announcement, with Wei Adams coming in as a reserve in place of Gary Cameron, who is still sidelined following a knee operation in April this year.
Scotland Senior Men Head Coach Derek Forsyth said, “We face England in our first match, who we played two months ago at the Four Nations event in Glasgow, losing twice. Those games were a good benchmark for us to see the level where we needed to be. It was the start of our preparation phase of training and we are hoping to learn from our last performances against them.
“Significantly, we also play South Africa, who are just back from the World Cup, and who are our first match at the Commonwealth Games in two weeks’ time. It will be a good game to see how each team plays but I doubt either side will give too much away ahead of the Games.
“It’s a shame we’ve not been able to get game time over the two months since the Four Nations finished. It would have been ideal to have had additional games, however the proximity of the World Cup meant teams simply were unable to travel to Scotland for games.
“Therefore, the Investec Cup has become a much greater focus for us in terms of testing our preparations. The team is really looking forward to playing these matches.
“I would like to thank Glynhill Hotel for the additional funding they have given us so we can train part time for Glasgow 2014 and I hope these performances at the Investec Cup will show the difference it has made.”
Similarly, Senior Women have one change from the sixteen players and reserves announced for the Commonwealth Games; reserve goalkeeper Nicki Cochrane will travel with Scotland U21 Women to compete in the EuroHockey Nations Championship II in Vienna, Austria next week.
Assessing the challenge and opposition facing his side, Scotland Senior Women Head Coach Gordon Shepherd said, “We’re aiming for good, consistent performance throughout the tournament and if we make sure we play to our strengths then we have a chance of making the final on the last day.
“We won’t underestimate Wales, even though we had solid results when we played them a few months ago. They have been training hard, so the results may be closer. We are confident for a solid result none the less.
“We played South Africa in the Champions Challenge and went a goal behind very early on but came back and competed against them very well. We will be looking forward to the challenge and confident of a good performance against the side that has just come back from the World Cup.
“Finally, England will be an exciting match as usual. Yes, they didn’t have a great World Cup campaign but that doesn’t mean we should underestimate them. We had a great game against them last summer at the Europeans, only just losing out by a goal and both sides are defiantly up for it, which may be trickier with England on home soil.”
Significant cap milestones could be achieved in London; Ross Stott is in line to win his 100th cap in the fourth match, while in the women’s squad, Olympian Emily Maguire could win her 100th Scotland international cap against South Africa in Wednesday’s opening game. Moreover, Nicki Skrastin and Aileen Davis look set to reach 50 international caps.
