Mixed fortunes for Scotland’s European representatives

Scotland’s European club representatives once again experienced mixed fortunes on the second day of continental competition, with a win, draw and loss recorded.

Grove Menzieshill have guaranteed top spot in Pool A of the EuroHockey Club Champions Challenge II in France after a 2-1 win over Lithuanian side Gintra Strekte Uni HC.

Scotland international Amy Brodie put the Dundonians in front in the third minute, before being dragged level in the 20th minute by a Samanta Jakovlevaite field goal.

However, veteran Louise Carrol fired the winning goal from a penalty corner shortly before half-time, resulting in a 100% pool record for the Taysiders.

Milne Craig Clydesdale Western were left frustrated after a late equaliser from Swansea City’s Sophie Clayton two minutes from full-time meant the Titwood outfit had to settle for a share of the points in the EuroHockey Club Challenge I event.

Anna-Mae Morton’s goal just before half-time had given the Glasgow side the lead.

Nevertheless, they still sit top of pool A ahead of tomorrow’s final group match against Italy’s S.G. Amsicora ASD, but it is likely they will need to record a win to guarantee progress to the promotion battle on Monday.

In the Men’s EuroHockey Club Champions Trophy, it is looking likely that Grange will land up in the bottom four of the competition after another narrow 3-2 loss, this time against hosts Three Rock Rovers.

The Stags experienced an early set-back in the fifth minute when Jody Hosking gave the Dubliners the early advantage, but rallied to take a 2-1 lead when Scotland international Hamish Imrie notched two goals inside a minute late in the first period.

However, Johnny Bruton ensured the two sides would go in level at the half-time interval, scoring a goal from open play right on the hooter.

Colin Clarke’s side were left to rue their bad luck when Ross Canning’s winning goal in the 52nd minute sealed the win to the delight of the home support.
