Moodie puts Inverleith in pole position

INDOOR NATIONAL LEAGUE  –  MEN        BELL`S SPORTS CENTRE IN PERTH

Inverleith made finishing the day in pole position in the indoor first division a rather tortuous process, earlier in the day they unexpectedly drew 2-2 with Edinburgh rivals Grange, then recovered to beat champions Grove Menzieshill 4-3.   A 21st minute strike by Graham Moodie proved to be the winner, leaving his side a single point ahead of the Taysiders at the half way stage in the season.

It was a ding-dong first half, Gavin Byers opened for Menzieshill in the first minute, but Inverleith then took the initiative with two quick strikes by Adam McKenzie and Phil Hall.   Sam Tilston equalised for the Taysiders, only for David Guy from the spot to give Inverleith a 3-2 lead as the interval approached.   But with seconds to go a Michael Ross penalty corner tied the scores at 3-3 at the break.

The second half had only one goal in it, a minute after the interval Moodie struck for Inverleith and the remainder of the contest saw Menzieshill desperately pressing for the equaliser, but to no avail.

In their opening fixture Menzieshill overcame the potential banana skin of the mercurial Glynhill Kelburne with a comfortable 7-1 win.   The contest was over by the interval as the Taysiders romped into a 6-1 lead, the goals came from Mike Ross, Chris Wilson, two from Ben Cromar, Ross McPherson and finally Gavin Byers, Michael Nicol getting a consolation for the Paisley outfit.   Menzieshill, perhaps thinking of later games, took their foot off the pedal and only added one to their total, Wilson getting his second of the match.

Menzieshill`s second encounter with local rivals Dundee Wanderers always provides a little something and the latter`s early two goal lead through Bobby Ralph and Fergus Sandison was certainly not in coach Chris Anderson`s script.   Normal service resumed by the interval with goals from Allan Law, Wilson (2), Gavin Tomlinson and Byers to give Menzieshill a 5-2 advantage.   The game then went tame until the final three minutes when Wilson with another two and McPherson completed the scoring.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Inverleith swamped bottom side Harris 12-2 to make up a little leeway on the goal difference margin with Menzieshill at the top.  In the first half there were doubles from Derek Salmond and Chris Duncan while David Guy and Tom Cousins also scored for a 6-1 advantage.   A hat-trick from Graham Moodie was the highlight of the second half, Salmond got his third, while Ross Jamieson and Phil Hall were also on the scoresheet.    Mark Callaghan and Gavin Martin scored the consolations for Harris.

However, Inverleith fell from grace when they could only draw 2-2 with city rivals Grange, and that only courtesy of a goal by Callum Duke 30 seconds from the end.  Murdo Elwis gave Grange a single goal lead at the break, but Duncan equalised from the spot seven minutes into the second half.   Immediately after Duncan Riddell pout Grange ahead again, but with three minutes left Duncan`s spot effort was brilliantly saved by Sean Hadfield.   Only Duke`s last minute counter saved Inverleith`s blushes but left the Edinburgh side now two points adrift of Menzieshill.

Dundee Wanderers` drive to secure fourth place for themselves was given a boost with a 7-2 win over Western Wildcats.   It was tight at the interval with only a Bobby Ralph goal separating the sides.   A minute into the second half Joe Simpson equalised for the Wildcats, but thereafter the contest belonged to the Dundonians, Ralph finished off with a hat-trick, Ross Davies got two while the other strikes came from Paul Dailly and Fergus Sandison.

The Wildcats recovered their composure to see off Kelburne 8-4, most of the goals coming from the Simpson brothers, Douglas notched a hat-trick while Joe scored twice.

Grange started the long road to safety at the bottom of the division, a last minute strike by Gary Cameron gave the Edinburgh side a narrow 4-3 win over PSL Clydesdale.   Cameron and Fraser Sands gave Grange a 2-1 lead at the break, Dave Clark replied for the Titwood side.   Although Matt Connor scored again for Grange, a double by Gordon Amour brought the score back to 3-3 until Cameron`s last gasp winner.

The Grange recovery continued with a 6-3 win over Dundee Wanderers, Murdo Elwis and Fraser Sands both scored twice while the other strikes came from Cameron and Stewart Laing.  With seven points from today`s three games, Grange have moved up from sixth to fourth in the table.

Clydesdale gave themselves a bit of a relegation lifeline with a 4-3 win over Harris, leaving the Dundee side pointless at the foot of the table.  There were two goals for Gordon Amour and the others came from Michael McKenzie and Fraser Hirst.
