Much improved Scotland U21 men fall short against England in Loughborough

England U21 men 4-1 Scotland U21 men

A much improved Scotland U21 men’s performance saw them defeated by clinical finishing in a 4-1 defeat against England in Loughborough.

Scotland got off to another good start and the opening quarter saw them match their hosts’ toe-to-toe.

The opening quarter didn’t offer much in terms of goal scoring opportunities but it was an entertaining contest, and showed a clear step-up from the previous game.

Scotland learned their lessons from the previous encounter; sticking to their tasks and defending their circle much better, and the first quarter ended goalless.

England managed to find the net twice in the second quarter with the only two chances they had. The clinical finishing was telling as the hosts earned a 2-0 half time advantage.

The home side scored a third after the restart but Scotland struck right back with a goal of their own. Scott Menzies did well to play the ball across the English D for Ben Galloway to shoot at goal. Galloway’s shot didn’t find the net but Noah Jones was on hand to convert the rebound and make the score 3-1.

There were more opportunities for Scotland goals; the visitors carved England open for a three-on-one opportunity but Keir Robb was only able to bag a corner rather than a goal.

From the resulting corner Iain McFadden came close but his effort was saved on the line, keeping the Scots at bay.

A lapse of concentration in the final quarter allowed England to score a fourth but overall it was a much better performance, and lets the squad see the level they need to reach at the Men’s U21 EuroHockey Championships this summer.
