Peregrines Cup underway

The Peregrines Cup, a Pre-Aberdeen Asset Management
national league tournament for first division clubs, starts this
Sunday with three fixtures.

It is difficult to predict the form book as several of the
leading sides will be without their international players,
preparing for the forthcoming FIH Champions Challenge tournament in
Dublin at the end of September.  That is clearly the
circumstance facing Milne Craig Western as last year`s runners-up
in the national league travel to the Capital to face CALA
Edinburgh.

Western`s coach Neil Menzies, who is also assistant to Gordon
Shepherd with the Scotland squad, will not be in charge of
Western`s campaign throughout this tournament, the coaching mantle
will be transferred to Catriona Semple.   But Menzies has
laid out the game plan for the event.   “I think the
competition gives us a good chance to look at some of the up and
coming youngsters before the national league kicks
off.”   That means places for players like Fiona Burnett,
Francis Lonergan and Jenny Mathieson.

“But it is also vitally important that those regular first team
players not involved with the national team get up to speed and get
some quality pitch time,” said Menzies.

Last season Western performed a double 6-0 victory over CALA in
the league, it will be interesting to see if the Edinburgh side can
take something at home from the truncated Western
outfit.   (Meggetland @ 14.00).

There are two other fixtures, Giffnock should still be too
strong for a Western Wildcats` side that only managed to stave off
relegation by winning the play-off against Watsonians. (Hutchesons`
Grammar School @ 14.30).    The remaining game
between VWS Dundee Wanderers and Glynhill Kelburne might be closer
given they drew 2-2 in the first league encounter last season and
the Paisley shaded the return by a single goal (Maryfield @
14.30)

In the three Aberdeen Asset Management national league division 2
fixtures, the two relegated sides Dundee Wanderers and CALA
Edinburgh get an early opportunity to lay their claim to an
immediate return to the top flight with home fixtures against Alpha
Date Carnegie and Falkirk GHG respectively.
(Meggetland @15.30 – CALA game).    Aberdeen GSFPs
and Highland are the contestants for the remaining game.
(Aberdeen Sports Village @ 12.00)

Two Scottish first division sides are continuing their build-up for
the coming season with ventures in foreign parts, Inverleith cross
over to Ireland for the annual Cookstown tournament while Glynhill
Kelburne take on top English sides Beeston and Bowdon.

Inverleith return to Ulster to defend their Cookstown title
which they won last year, and are up against Irish sides Railway
Union, Annadale and host side Cookstown along with Wimbledon from
the English Conference League East in a pool
competition.

“Our main objective for this weekend is four good performances
against very good opposition.  This weekend is about getting
ourselves read to play in the Presidents Cup and then the national
League.

“Winning this tournament last year give the squad great belief
and we went on to win our first six league games.
