Pitch upgrade for hockey facility at DISC

Last week, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison
MSP announced a £225,000 sportscotland investment to upgrade
facilities at the Dundee International Sports Centre (DISC),
including the renovation and implementation of a new water-based
pitch for hockey.

The existing water-based hockey pitch will be replaced, having
become worn-out and unsuitable for play, and the new pitch will be
capable of hosting international matches, as well as continuing to
be a regional hockey facility for clubs and schools in the Tayside
area.

Elanor Cormack, Tayside & Fife Development Manager, said: “The
replacement of the water-based pitch at DISC is a crucial step in
supporting hockey in Dundee and Midland, and we are pleased to see
both Dundee City Council and sportscotland supporting this project.
The pitch will both provide a focus for elite development in the
area and allow young players to experience hockey in a quality,
central location.”

Sport Minister Shona Robison also commented: “If we are to achieve
our ambition of increasing levels of sporting and physical
activity, it is essential that we provide quality facilities that
will capture the enthusiasm generated by the Commonwealth Games and
inspire people to adopt healthier more active lifestyles.

“These new pitches at the DISC will enhance the sporting
infrastructure within Dundee and benefit individuals and sports
clubs across the city as well as the wider sporting
community.”

sportscotland Chief Executive, Stewart Harris said: “DISC is a
fantastic example of a sports centre that caters for both the local
community, and our high-performance athletes. There are superb
links with local clubs and governing bodies of sport, and I am
delighted that we have been able to support the project with
strategic advice at a design and specification level along with an
investment of £225,000 from our Sports Facilities Fund.”

The renovation will also include the upgrade of the existing
sand-dressed pitch to a 3G synthetic pitch, which will broaden the
use of the facility to include football and touch-rugby. The 3G
pitch will offer local communities and clubs the chance to play,
train and compete on a high quality all-weather surface.

Work is due to get underway on site in September, with a completion
date earmarked for the water-based pitch at the end of
October.
