Plenty of goals but Grange and Watsonians continue relentlessly at the top

In a day where the goals flowed in the Premiership Grange men and Watsonians women are still on top.

Grange are still in pole position at the top of the men`s Premiership after a late goal gave them the points.

The Edinburgh side seemed to be cruising with a double from Jacob Tweedie put them two and cruising. But Clydesdale had other ideas, and first Andrew Allan and then David Clark after coach Ciaran Crawford replaced his keeper with an additional outfield player levelled the contest with three minutes left.

But in the closing 30 seconds there was a scramble in the Clydesdale circle and Calum Lothian poked the ball home for a belated winner.

No such issues for either Edinburgh University or Western Wildcats. The students are still in second spot two points adrift after beating bottom side ESM 9-1 – and thereby advanced their prolific goal tally. The usual suspects were on target, Keir Robb scored a hat-trick, Declan Bradley got two while the rest were single strikes

A magnificent seven from Western striker Andrew McConnell was undoubtedly the achievement of the day, they came both from penalty corners and open play, and that certainly knocked the stuffing out of Inverleith. The final score was 9-1 with the other Western goals came from youngster Adam Mackenzie, Stuart Hatton got Inverleith`s consolation in the midst of the avalanche.

Watsonians moved up to fourth in the table after a 7-1 win over Dunfermline Carnegie. A hat-trick from Danny Cain was the highlight with the others coming from captain Tom Swarbrick, Ben Scott, Nathen Liggett (his debut goal) and Dan Coultas. Magnus Ferrier got the Fifers` consolation.

After a 4-1 win over FMGM Monarchs Hillhead have moved into the top six bracket. Matt Carder opened, then player/coach Yan Adams doubled the tally with a deflection, but Scott Glashan pulled one back for the Taysiders with a scramble goal at a penalty corner. The final quarter belonged to Hillhead, Adams added his own second with a reverse stick volley into the far corner and James Lynch Small finished off the scoring with a deflection in front of goal.

Finally, Uddingston are also on the way up after seeing off Kelburne 2-0, in five minutes Jedd Campbell opened at a penalty corner and the result was sealed with a deflected goal from Alex McGregor.

There appears to be no stopping champions Watsonians in the women’s Premiership, they travelled to third placed and came away with a 4-0 victory. It was only one at the interval, Katherine Holdgate finding the net from the spot. The champions added three more in the second half, a double of penalty corner conversions from Emily Dark to be followed by an open play strike by Ellie Stott.

Edinburgh University moved above Wildcats, who had no game today, with a 5-0 win at Inverleith. There were two goals each for Georgia Jones and Itske Hooftman with Amy Brodie and Neave Halliday getting the others.

Clydesdale Western are now third after a 6-0 win over Uddingston at Titwood.

At the other end of the table Dundee Wanderers picked up their first point of the campaign after a 1-1 draw with Gordonians. It was goalless at half-time, but a penalty corner strike from Ruth Cox put the Taysiders ahead. But within a minute the Aberdonians were level at a counter-attack which left Ella Ritchie sending a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle into the net….and that is how it ended.

Hillhead consolidated their sixth place with a 2-0 home win over Grange. After a goalless first half Wendy Andrews opened the scoring for Hillhead with a penalty corner strike. In the final quarter a cross by Zoe Irvine found Mhairi Low who swept the ball into the net to double Hillhead`s tally. Grange had a chance to get back into the contest with a penalty but the flick went wide of the target.

Meanwhile in Malaysia Grange striker Fraser Heigh celebrated his Great Britain under-21 debut with a goal in a 4-1 win over South Africa at the opening match of the Sultan of Johor Cup. All the goals came in the first half, Alex Pendle opened, seven minutes later Heigh scored to be followed by two penalty corner strikes from Rory Penrose. The other Scot in the GB line-up was Jamie Golden.

On Sunday Edinburgh University moved to within three points of leaders Watsonians after a 6-1 home win over Glasgow University at Peffermill.

Top scorer was former Scotland striker Amy Brodie with a hat-trick, Jika Nyirenda bagged a couple and Katie Robertson got the other.

The result leaves the Glasgow students still second from bottom of the table, but they are still two games short of most of the other sides.
