Promotion for Western Wildcats men while Edinburgh University and Clydesdale Western are in women’s promotion play-offs

CLYDESDALE WESTERN 3 KOLOS BORYSPOL (UKRAINE) 0

Clydesdale finished their pool programme with a 100% record following three comfortable wins…and now on to tomorrow`s crucial promotion play-offs.

Early this morning Clydesdale faced up to Ukrainian side Kolos Boryspol and came away with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

After an almost blank first quarter Holly Steiger finally broke the deadlock just before the short break. There were no further goals and that is how it stood at the interval.

Just at the end of the third quarter Karen Belch converted a penalty corner to double Clydesdale`s tally. And in 50 minutes Holly Steiger scored her own second of the game, this time at a penalty corner, to complete the scoring.

“Overall we controlled the game but need to be more clinical in the circle,” said coach Derek Forsyth. “We`ve achieved our first goal which was to go through the group unbeaten. Although we expect another tough match tomorrow, but we`ll be ready to go again and win promotion.”

Clydesdale will play local side Gaziantep Polisgucu in tomorrow’s play-off

WESTERN 3 OSHVSM PHOENIX ZYTOMYR REGION (UKRAINE) 0

Western Wildcats needed only a draw against OSHVSM Pheonix Zytomyr from Ukraine to qualify for tomorrow`s final but Vishal Marwaha`s charges made no mistake by winning 3-0 to head the pool with full points.

The game could not have started better for the Auchenhowie side, inside four minutes Andrew McConnell had put them ahead from the spot.

There were no further goals for Western until the final minute of the third quarter when Hamish Galt doubled their tally from open play. With ten minutes left Fraser Calder added a third to ensure that the points went to Western.

“We`ve achieved our top objective which was to gain promotion for Scotland, now we want to go out and win the tournament in the final,” said coach Vishal Marwaha. “We took a while to get into the game, Kolos played much better in their unorthodox style and caused us some problems. We had a lot of possession but did not really make the most of this, however the most important thing was to win.”

Western will now play Cardiff & Met from Wales in tomorrow’s final, they beat Slavia Prague 5-1 to top the other pool.

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY 2 NAVAX AHTC WIEN (AUSTRIA) 0

With pole position in the pool effectively already in the bag Edinburgh University took on Austrian side Navax AHTC Wien needing only a point to avoid Clydesdale Western in the promotion play-offs.

The match seemed to be heading for a goalless draw approaching the end of the third quarter when up stepped Scotland and Great Britain player Amy Costello to slot home a penalty corner. Two minutes later in the final quarter Costello repeated the exercise at another set piece to secure the points.

A delighted University coach Sam Judge said: “I was really pleased with the girls’ performance today as they had to be very patient and disciplined to get the breakthrough

“The Austrians defended well but the girls kept going and got the result   Overall an excellent team effort.”

The Edinburgh students will play the other Austrian side SV Arminen for promotion tomorrow.
