Reopening of DISC

The official reopening of the water-based pitch at DISC, Dundee
took place on 23rd June. This was an opportunity to showcase the
new surface to invited guests as well as recognise the important
input of the hockey community in getting to this point. Midland
Hockey and the Dundee clubs have been involved in the campaign for
a number of years to secure the replacement of the carpet and
improvements at the site, which Dundee City Council have now been
able to deliver. Their efforts have been shown to be well
worthwhile as the new pitch looked excellent at the opening with a
busy schedule of activity for the day.

DISC reopening

The U18 Scotland Men’s squad used the pitch for the first time in
the morning to train ahead of the Celtic Cup. The squad then
assisted Grove-Menzieshill, Dundee Wanderers and Harris Hockey
Clubs to run a youth festival with a mixture of players from the
three clubs’ own sessions. The pitch then saw some match action
with a friendly between a Midland Select side and the Scotland
U18s.
The official opening of the pitch, along with the 3G surface
(formerly the sand-based pitch) alongside it was carried out by
Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport.
Amongst those invited to attend were Midland Hockey Union
representatives, Dundee City Council officials, sportscotland and
National Governing Body staff; as well as international umpire Ged
Curran and GB player Vikki Bunce.

The improved pitch now gives Dundee two quality water-based pitches
(alongside the pitch at Dundee High School) and will give the local
clubs and the District ample facility access to provide for their
players. In addition, the pitch is a key regional resource for
performance and national squad sessions.
