Scotland girls come second in the Celtic Cup

UNDER 18 YOUTH CELTIC CUP – PEFFERMILL

SCOTLAND 3  WALES 1 (WOMEN)

Scotland under 18 women came second in the youth Celtic Cup at
Peffermill after beating Wales 3-1 in the final pool
match.   The Scots youngsters went ahead in seven
minutes, Inverleith`s Clare Laverty converted a penalty corner low
into the bottom corner of the net.   Although Wales
equalised following a scramble in front of goal four minutes later,
Laverty again found the net from a set piece after her shot
deflected off the stick of a defender into the roof of the net.

There was only one goal in the second half, an intricate passing
move involving Emily Watson and Amber McNeill pushed the ball on to
Grange`s Lucy Preston in the circle and she swept the ball past the
goalkeeper for 3-1.

“We would have liked to have beaten the Irish yesterday and
lifted the trophy, but it was pleasing to have beaten the Welsh
today to come second.  We put in an excellent performance
against Wales and thoroughly deserved our victory,” said Louise
McIntyre, Scotland`s manager.

Ireland won the inaugural Celtic Cup with a perfect record after
rolling the Swiss over by 10-0.

SCOTLAND 1  WALES 1  (MEN)

Scotland finished third in the Celtic Cup after being held to a
1-1 draw by Wales in their final match.   It proved to be
an agonising finale to proceedings, the Scots were a goal ahead and
heading for second spot behind the Irish, but Wales scored from a
penalty corner with 20 seconds remaining to take that runners-up
spot on goal difference.

The Scots youngsters had most of the play in the first half and
had chances to take the lead.  In 3 minutes a cross from the
right by Ed Greaves found Tom Barton at the back post but his
effort went wide of the target.  Fergus Sandison set up the
second chance in 12 minutes, he found Greaves but his shot was
saved by the goalkeeper.   Barton had a further chance a
few minutes before the interval but he shot wide of the goal, and
both sides reached the interval goalless.

The Scots continued to dominate in the second half and
deservedly took the lead in four minutes.  Sandison drove down
the right, his cross found Lee Morton and he then found a Welsh
foot.   At the resulting penalty corner Watsonians` Danny
Cain converted with a powerful low drag flick.  The Scots
youngsters continued to press for a second, a Sandison
cross-come-shot missed the target while the same player had his
effort saves after a Barton drive created the opening.

Wales came back into the contest after Barton made a visit to
the sin-bin for ten minutes, but looked to have run out of ideas
until the belated equaliser.

Ireland took the title with a 12-0 win over the Swiss.
