Scotland Men in 2-0 win over England ‘A’

Scotland Senior Men ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over England ‘A’ at Peffermill this afternoon following goals from Grove Menzieshill pairing Paul Martin and Gavin Byers.
The Scots got off the perfect start in the seventh minute when Paul Martin found himself space in between the England defensive lines and advanced inside the circle to round England ‘A’ goalkeeper Patrick Smith and slot the ball home for a 1-0 lead.
In the 15th minute, Brendan Creed found Chris Griffiths inside the centre of the circle but his snapshot was easily saved by Scotland number one Jamie Cachia.
Two minutes later, the visitors were awarded a penalty corner but again Cachia was alive to Andy Bull’s drag-flick attempt and the ball was parried to safety.
Chris Newman’s reverse stick effort was also saved by Cachia in the 22nd minute before the Scottish shot-stopper denied Bull again with a excellent save with his outstretched stick shortly afterwards.
A reverse stick pass from Scotland striker Kenny Bain was diverted just wide of the left hand post in the 23rd minute by a diving Ian Moodie before Ross Stott brought a smart save from Smith at a penalty corner set-piece in the 27th minute.
Scotland almost doubled their advantage two minutes later when good play from Derek Salmond down the Scotland right led to his cross being skewed just wide of goal by Chris Duncan.
The Scots were piling on the pressure as they looked to secure a further goal before half-time a Wei Adams flashed a drive across the goal after cutting inside two defenders from the left.
Ian Scholefield and Chris Grassick were also denied as the home side had to settle for a 1-0 advantage at the half-time interval.
Derek Forsyth’s side started the second half with intent and Ian Moodie almost found Bain in the centre of the circle after forcing an opening on the right flank.
In the 42nd minute, William Marshall had a penalty corner strike saved by Smith and Gordon McIntyre was unable to turn home the re-bound.
However, Scotland doubled their lead two minutes later with a spectacular goal. Graham Moodie found Callum Duke on the right hand touchline with a long-raking pass and the Edinburgh University midfielder’s low cross was expertly turned past Smith by Gavin Byers’ out-stretched stick to make it 2-0.
Duke was again at the heart of the action in the 50th minute when he robbed Griffiths inside the England half but his pass couldn’t be finished off by Fraser Hirst at the back post.
Both Bull and Bain forced saves at penalty corners for England ‘A’ and Scotland, before Byers scooped the ball just over the bar after Smith had smothered Ian Moodie’s attempt on goal in the 59th minute.
The final piece of action saw Ian Moodie find Martin in space but the Grove Menzieshill striker was unable to beat Smith.
However, the Scots were comfortable in the end and with a 2-0 victory, can look to forward to tomorrow’s second match at Peffermill (11.00).S
