Scotland Men’s squad to face England, Germany and Spain in Four Nations

Scotland will play host to a men’s invitational Four Nations
tournament at the sportscotland National Centre,
Inverclyde this weekend, with the highest calibre of opposition
facing the Scots in a series of friendly
internationals over three days on 11-13 June.

Three of the world’s top five teams have been invited to
Inverclyde for the tournament; Germany (ranked No.2), England
(ranked No.4) and Spain (ranked No.5) will be the sides competing,
signifying intent by Russell Garcia’s side to challenge themselves
against the world’s best international teams.

Garcia names twenty-one players in his squad for what will be
three tough matches for the Scottish players. The Scots will look
to the experience of Great Britain internationalists Niall Stott
and Graham Moodie in the challenges ahead, with Stott well aware of
the talents of the English contingent having recently competed with
Great Britain in Malaysia.

There is also strong representation from Scottish champions
Glynhill Hotel Kelburne, including Men’s Player of the Year Michael
Christie, and Young Player of the Year Michael Bremner. Recent
squad addition Dan Coultas also has the opportunity to further his
experience at senior international level.

Current European champions England will bring a strong squad
north of the border, with all sixteen players selected by head
coach Jason Lee having represented Great Britain at international
level. They will be led by England and GB captain Barry Middleton,
who will be looking to add to his tally of 34 England goals, whilst
Surbition’s James Tindall and Matt Daly will carry the main goal
threat with over 90 goals between them for the national side. With
over five cap centurions in the squad, including Rob Moore and Glen
Kirkham, Russell Garcia’s men will face an English side full of
experience at senior international level.

Meanwhile, 2008 Olympic champions and recent World Cup finalists
Germany will pose the toughest challenge of the weekend for the
Scots. Head coach Markus Weise names a highly experienced squad for
the tournament, with a cumulative squad total of 1714 caps between
the players highlighting the longevity of these players at
international level. Leading the list is forward Matthias Witthaus,
with an extraordinary 324 caps won for the German national
side.

Spanish head coach Dani Martin will be without a number of
players from Club de Campo and Oranje Zwart, as they will be
competing in the final stages of the Euro Hockey League in Den
Haag, Holland this coming weekend. However, many of the players
will be familiar faces to the Scots, with Alex Casasayas, Alex
Fabregas, Manel Terrace, Oriol Fabregas, Pau Quemada and Salvador
Piera of Real Club de Polo involved in the EHL group match against
Glynhill Hotel Kelburne at the start of the 2010/11 season.

Looking forward to the three-day tournament, Chief Executive
Brent Deans said, “Scottish Hockey is delighted to be able to stage
this friendly international tournament at Inverclyde. It is a
great opportunity to bring some of the world’s best players and
teams to Scotland where they can showcase their talents. We’d be
delighted to see a big crowd down to support our Scottish players
against quality opposition in the form of England, Germany and
Spain.”
