Scotland U18 Boys beat Wales U18s in Glasgow
Scotland U18 Boys’ came out on top 4-0 in their clash with a spirited Welsh side in the first of two clashes at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre. The games come as Scotland’s U18s looked to start their run up to the European Championship next month.
Scotland started on the front foot, keeping the visitors mostly to their own half. It didn’t take long to capitalise on this pressure as Ollie Wilson controlled a long ball over the top, and dribbled into the Welsh circle, to cut back to Murray Griffiths who slotted the ball into the goal four minutes into the first quarter.
This seemed to inspire the young Scots, who upped the pressure as they searched for more goals. As the quarter progressed both sides exchanged chances but Scotland went into the second quarter 1-0 up.
The opening part of the second quarter played out much the same as the first, with the young Scots controlling the possession and tempo. This left Wales with very few opportunities, as they tried to get a foothold in the game. While the hosts continued to press, Scotland couldn’t find a way to get that elusive second goal prior to half-time. Although, it took the quick reactions of the Hamish Kinloch to keep that lead, as two Welsh short corners nearly found their way through within the final passages of the half.
Wales came into the third quarter with more ferocity than the first two, which was allowing them to finally have some of the possession. That did come to cost them as Scotland finally got their second goal from a short corner as a result of the more expansive game. The ball was sent to the top of the circle, where Sam Hunt was waiting to convert a low driven shot under the Welsh keeper. That goal seemed to re-energise Scotland, as they started to press the visitors back into their half again.
After being involved in the first goal Wilson finally got his name on the scoresheet, as he received the ball ono the left-side of the circle, with a quick reverse stick shot flying into the goal for 3-0. Henry Porter got his name on the scoresheet as he got the ball in the midst of a packed box to lift it over the Welsh keeper for 4-0 with the end of the third quarter approaching.
The fourth quarter wasn’t as action packed as the previous three, but Scotland kept a clean sheet to go with the victory. It’s a quick turnaround for both sides as they meet again tomorrow in their secondly game of the weekend.
