Scotland U18 Girls and Boys
Scotland U18 Girls 5-1 Wales
Scotland U18 Girls produced a much improved performance to defeat Wales at Forthbank today. A double for Millie Brown and one apiece for Emma McGregor, Eilidh Thomson and Claire Hill gave the Scots a well-deserved 5-1 victory.
Commenting on his team’s performance, Scotland U18 Girls Assistant Coach Mark Ralph said, “We’re really happy with the outcome of the match. We watched the videos of yesterday’s game last night and the players were really receptive to the improvements we identified.
“We weren’t focussing on Wales, we just focussed on our performance and getting the processes right today, which resulted in a massive step up in how we played. We communicated much better and the intensity was right for the level we require from the players.”
Scotland opened the scoring inside two minutes of the first half when good play from Eilidh Thomson found Emma McGregor in space to beat the Welsh goalkeeper and give her side the lead at 1-0.
The Scots almost doubled their advantage five minutes later when Millie Brown was on the end of some excellent build up play but her shot on target was well smothered by the goalkeeper.
In the 13th minute, the home side were awarded a penalty flick but Jessica Ross unfortunately saw her shot saved to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
However, Scotland were not to be denied for much longer and in the 23rd minute Millie Brown scored her first goal of the match to make it 2-0.
As the first half drew to a close, Jenny Eadie had two attempts on goal foiled by the Welsh goalkeeper, one a strike from a penalty corner that flashed just wide of the upright and one shot blocked by a couple of Wales defenders.
With the score 2-0 at half-time, Scotland didn’t take long to extend their lead in the second half when Brown, McGregor and Thomson combined to give the latter an easy tap-in and enable Scotland to take a 3-0 lead in the 37th minute.
Three minutes later, Scotland put the match beyond Wales when the combination of McGregor, Thomson and Brown clicked again to allow Brown to volley a smart finish past the keeper and make it 4-0.
Eadie and McGregor had further chances on goal before the goal margin became five goals in the 58th minute. Maisie Morris demonstrated great skill in creating space for herself on the right of the circle and her cross was met by Claire Hill at the far post to make it 5-0.
Not to be outdone, Wales grabbed a consolation goal in the 66th minute when Rhiannon Griffiths rounded off the scoring to make the final score 5-1.
Scotland U18 Boys 2-1 Wales
Meanwhile, Scotland U18 Boys earned a hard fought 2-1 win against their Welsh counterparts courtesy of first half goals from Jack MacKenzie and Hamish Imrie.
After the match, Scotland U18 Boys Head Coach Graham Dunlop said, “It was a tougher match today, we tried different things in the match and it was good to try them in this environment. They maybe didn’t come off all the time but the players will learn a lot from games like this.
“It was a harder game today and we won ugly, if you like, but we’ve won two games from two this weekend. We will now look forward to continuing our preparations for the Europeans this summer.”
Dunlop’s side got off to the perfect start inside the first minute of the match when Murdo Elwis intercepted a loose defensive clearance from the Welsh defender and played Jack MacKenzie in on goal. The midfielder made no mistake in slotting the ball past the oncoming Welsh goalkeeper to make it 1-0 after only fifty seconds.
Wales steadied themselves from the early set-back to win a penalty corner in the 11th minute. However, the Scots defended the set-play and launched a quickfire counter-attack which resulted in Hamish Imrie finding space inside the Welsh circle to double his side’s advantage at 2-0 only thirty seconds later.
Imrie almost gave the home side a three goal cushion in the 16th minute when his reverse stick strike cannoned off the upright and Craig Graham was denied a goal when his 25th minute penalty corner drag-flick was parried to safety by the Welsh goalkeeper.
With the Scots looking to extend their lead, they were caught cold in the 28th minute when Ben Wigmore pulled Wales back into the match at 2-1 after finishing off a penalty corner move.
Graham had another penalty corner effort saved just before the interval to leave the sides at 2-1 at the half-time hooter.
Ten minutes into the second half, Elwis found himself one-one-one with the Welsh ‘keeper but his low drive was well saved, while four minutes later Danny Cain’s drag-flick from a penalty corner was pushed round the post.
Wales finished the stronger side in the second half, but Scotland dug deep to keep their attacks at bay and record a narrow 2-1 victory at full-time.

Scotland’s U18 squads both completed a double over Wales this weekend as they ran out winners in their matches at Forthbank.
