Scotland U21 men’s squad to face England

Scotland U21 men take on England U21 men in Loughborough this weekend as the Scots continue their campaign towards the U21 EuroHockey Championships this summer, and the prospect of qualifying for the Junior World Cup.

The action gets underway on Saturday 16th April at 15:00 to start the three-match series, before they meet again on Sunday 17th April at 15:00, then on Monday 18th April at 11:00.

2022 is set to be an incredible year for the team as they build towards the U21 EuroHockey Championships this summer, where they will target a top five finish despite needing a top six spot to qualify for the Junior World Cup.

These ambitious targets are being set by the coaching staff as this is an exciting and high-performing group of young athletes, with the potential to break records and make history.

This is the first Scotland U21s men’s squad to compete in the European top division since 2012, and they will aim to be the first Scotland Men’s U21 team to retain their status in the top division since 2002.

At the EuroHockey Championships in Ghent on 24-30 July Scotland feature alongside top-ranked competition in Belgium; the Netherlands; Germany; England; France; Russia; and Spain, with the top six reaching the World Cup.

These matches against England will give the Scots a taste of what can be expected when they face Europe’s top teams this summer.

Head Coach Graham Moodie said, ‘It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to play a top European Nation at this stage in our programme. England won a silver medal at the last European A Division and these matches will help us to bench mark our level at the moment and where we need to improve.

‘We have four players playing in the EHL this weekend and 22 players in the squad who will all get the opportunity to taste top level hockey, and we want to be as competitive as possible in this test series. It’s exciting to have nine new caps in the squad and this is just the development opportunity we need at this stage. We’re looking forward to the challenge.’
