Scotland Women climb four places in FIH World Rankings after Bronze Medal success

Scotland Women have been rewarded for their Bronze Medal
success in the recent FIH Champions Challenge with elevation in the
updated World Rankings released by the International Hockey
Federation today.

The Scots were the biggest movers in the rankings, climbing four
places from 21st to 17th, and leapfrogging
Belgium, Canada, Italy and Russia in the process. The squad is now
hot on the heels of Chile in 16th place, with only
thirty-seven ranking points separating the two sides.

Following a successful Champions Challenge campaign, during
which the team remained unbeaten in the Pool stages and defeated
Azerbaijan and Spain on their way to the Bronze Medal, the latest
rankings are reflective of the squad’s preparations, hard work,
effort, and ultimately, the results achieved over the last eighteen
months under Head Coach Gordon Shepherd.

Scotland’s next assignment is the EuroHockey Nations
Championship II in Poznan during August, where promotion to the
Championship’s top division is the primary target for Shepherd’s
squad.

The team will face Belarus, Poland and Wales in their group and
will be confident of progressing to the latter stages of the
competition to make the push for promotion.

Scotland Men’s position in the FIH World Rankings will be
updated and released in December 2011 following the conclusion of
the FIH Champions Trophy later this year.

Russell Garcia’s side are currently competing in the FIH
Champions Challenge in Lille, and also have the EuroHockey Nations
Championship II in Ukraine during August.  Like the Women’s
squad, they will be targeting promotion to the Championship.

The International Hockey Federation website has a fully updated
list of the FIH World Rankings.
