Scotland women draw with Ireland in final test match
A young Scotland women’s squad was denied victory against Ireland in Belfast by a last minute equaliser to make for a 1-1 draw. It was the third of three test matches that saw the Tartan Hearts draw twice and lose once against highly ranked Ireland.
The rain was torrential throughout the match but it didn’t stop Scotland starting the game strong. The Scots were on top and created a number of chances through corners and tested the Irish keeper.
Georgia Jones was denied by a great save in the first half as Scotland pressed to take the lead, and then Sarah Jamieson had a powerful effort fizz just wide of the post.
Another fantastic save in the second half denied Emily Dark a goal through a penalty corner that looked destined for the bottom right corner.
Ireland put Scotland on the back foot for a period with around 25 minutes to go but Scotland held out well, and showed great resilience.
In the final quarter Scotland looked threatening on counter attacks and it was from a quick break that the Scots finally opened the scoring. A swift counter that began on the edge of Scotland’s D saw the ball zip forward in a flowing attack down the left. Heather McEwan picked our Jamieson in the circle before Jamieson found Ruth Blaikie at the far post to finish. 1-0.
The victory was not to be for Scotland and with 30 seconds remaining Ireland forced an equaliser home to end the game 1-1.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “It was another brilliant performance in very challenging conditions. The rain was torrential but we were still able to play fluid exciting hockey.
“For such a young team to perform like this against a top side in Ireland is very pleasing. Of all the great results we’ve had this year these performances have to be up there, and to see this young squad gelling and learning together so quickly, the future is bright.”
