Scottish officials shine on European stage

Scotland’s officials continue to strongly represent the country on
the worldwide stage following a host of appointments by the
European Hockey Federation (EHF) for forthcoming continental club
and international competitions. In total, 21 appointments have been
awarded to Scottish officials.

Not only do these officials get to mix with the best of Europe’s
hockey players, they also get to travel around the continent and
experience the cultural sights of cities in which hockey is
played.

Iain McKay, one of Scotland’s most experienced officials having
experienced numerous EHF and FIH events to date, commented on his
selection for the U18 Men’s Youth Championship in Vienna, “I’m
pleased to have been given the opportunity to work with the best of
the European youth nations again. The opportunity to assist
countries and players to adapt and cope with the more demanding
roles expected at international levels and to help train and
develop new officials is fantastic.”

For Ross Dixon, his appointment as judge to the EuroHockey Club
Champions Challenge II in Athens is his first European selection,
“I have been umpiring at National League level for indoor and
outdoor, as well as being given technical appointments for the
Indoor National Leagues and last season’s Scottish Cup and District
Cup finals.

“It’s a mixture of delight and shock [to be appointed to the EHF
event], as I’ve only just made the EHF list but it means the
absolute world to me. Biggest moment of my hockey career to
date.”

It’s not only Scotland’s male officials who are performing well at
international level; a number of our female officials have also
been selected for the European events taking place next year.

Victoria Truesdale has been appointed to next year’s EuroHockey
Club Champions Cup in Hamburg, one of the most important
continental competitions of the season, “It is a nice feeling to be
selected and for me it lets me know that I am performing well
having been given this appointment.

“There is also nervousness, as this is the top competition in
Europe and there are rules and regulation variations for the
tournament that I have not previously experienced.  I also
know it will challenge me but this is part of the learning process
for me in tournament terms. I have now had a few European
appointments, mostly outdoor and one indoor, and have had
experience of being both a Judge and TO at these events.”

Barbara Morgan has been appointed to the Women’s EuroHockey Nations
Championship in Antwerp, the top female hockey competition. The
appointment comes a short period after working at the FIH World Cup
and London 2012 Olympics this year, “I’ve very pleased to be
representing Scotland at Europe’s Premier tournament and looking
forward to another great hockey experience. My experience of the
Olympics with Ian MacKay & Anne Wotherspoon was great, as well
as the World Cup in Argentina and the Olympic Qualifier in
Kazan.”

Scottish Hockey congratulates all our officials who have been
appointed to the EHF competitions.
